The Atom is all about power/weight and inboard concentration of mass. It's the Lotus recipe taken to the next level. There should be an Atom racing class, like there is for the Miata.

The Wrightspeed X1, a derivative of the Atom, is electric and does 0-60 in 3 seconds. Batteries are still a little heavy but you can't ignore the flat torque curve of an electric motor.

LOL we were just remembering the top gear video. That video played a VERY IMPORTANT part in getting the Atom. Actually the search started right after showing that video to Seth. lol So we were just repeating the stuff he said during the show. "I"M AM AN ALIEN!"... HAHAHA

That's me! Its a very bad and costly habbit. If I see something I want I just have to have it! About 2 months ago we went to LOBC and there was a 2007 LP640 Coupe in Ithaca Green right smack in the front of the showroom - I completely fell in love..... I am grateful however that it was sold b/c I was about to cut a check for about 250k and hand over the keys to my Gallardo! Plus it left me some play money to buy the Ariel Atom.

Anyway, its a blast as stated before.......... Beside's as previously stated on another thread, I certainly don't need my doors to go up to make garments go down, look at the pics, I don't need any doors!

Do any one you remember this article of the two at students at Hofstra who built themselves there own version of the atom more less than a year ago? One of the guys who did the project was named Seth Rosenberg, very close to yours! Are you related haha? I remember reading it when it came out and just though that I would post this up.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ENGINEERING; A Car Built by Two, Fast and Way Cool

    By MARCELLE S. FISCHLER
    Published: December 24, 2006

    MOVE over, Henry Ford.

The day after finals ended last spring, Eyal Angel and Seth Rosenberg, mechanical engineering majors at Hofstra University, set to work on their senior design project: building their own car.

No matter that they had not taken a course on how to build one. Hoping to be automotive pioneers, Mr. Angel, 23, of Plainview, and Mr. Rosenberg, 21, of East Meadow, scoured the Internet and books about suspension design, drive trains, electrical systems, fuel pumps, and cooling and exhaust systems. They designed a chassis on paper and created a computer model.

Working from scratch with neither a kit nor whole components, they welded together a tubular steel chassis in the Floral Park machine shop of Mr. Rosenberg's grandfather and built a high-performance racecar in Mr. Angel's backyard.

Seven and a half months later, they rolled out their Formula One-style two-seater for a presentation on the last day of class, Dec. 13.

''We love cars,'' Mr. Angel said. ''We just wanted to take on the challenge of trying to do this.''

Modeled after the Ariel Atom 2, a British racecar, theirs has a 2.4-liter turbocharged rear engine, rack-and-pinion steering, a five-speed manual transmission and low-slung blue and black seats. Lightweight at 1,200 pounds, the car has 250 horsepower and was designed to zoom from zero to 60 miles an hour in 3.5 seconds or less.

''Only Ferraris or Lamborghinis do it that fast,'' Mr. Angel said.

The students bought the engine and transmission from a wrecked 2004 Dodge Neon SRT on eBay for $2,300. For the cooling system, they installed copper piping from Home Depot and medical-grade flexible tubing to connect to an aluminum performance radiator. They designed a custom exhaust system.

An exotic racecar could run close to a quarter of a million dollars, Mr. Angel said, but their homemade racer cost $12,000. Mr. Angel and Mr. Rosenberg hope to manufacture more of the cars and market them for about $45,000.

''It's a very pure driving experience,'' Mr. Angel said. ''The pickup is absolutely phenomenal. It just pushes you back in the seat.''

All engineering elements from the chassis to the engine are exposed. The car has no doors or hood, though a nose cone may be added. They expect it to get 25 miles to the gallon.

''It is for the car enthusiast,'' Mr. Rosenberg said. ''It is no frills, no luxury, just if you enjoy driving, going fast.''

To make the car road-worthy under New York State Department of Motor Vehicle regulations, Mr. Angel and Mr. Rosenberg plan to install front and rear bumpers, rearview and side mirrors, turn signals, a windshield and a defroster.

''What we wanted to have in this car was really, really good acceleration, really good braking and good cornerability,'' Mr. Angel said.

Mr. Angel, who graduated Dec. 21, and Mr. Rosenberg, who receives his undergraduate degree in May, are both yearning for jobs in the automotive industry. A lifelong hobbyist, Mr. Rosenberg also loves to tinker with his 1994 Chevy Camaro, and rebuilt a 1979 Pontiac Trans Am.

Richard Jensen, the faculty adviser for the senior design class, said that most students modify machinery rather than undertake such a big project. Efforts this semester included a combination lawn mower and weed trimmer and a power assist for a workout bench that eliminates the need for a personal trainer.

''They went beyond my wildest dreams on this project,'' Mr. Jensen said. ''It's how Ford and how Olds started making their own cars.''

    M. David Burghardt, a professor of engineering, was amazed by the car's level of complexity. He said the students had applied their engineering knowledge and ability.

''They did everything that automobile designers do,'' he said.

After the novice car designers presented their project, including a 10-page paper and book full of designs, Vinnie Diez, a classmate, marveled as Mr. Rosenberg revved the engine on the car, which was sitting under a tarp on the parking lot.

''It's loud, it's beautiful, it's fast,'' Mr. Diez said. ''It's a work of art.''

I'll put $20 on the Atom up to 120 (on a closed track, of course, yada yada). After that you'll win the aerodynamics battle handily. ;)

Congrats Seth. I really thought I was gonna be the first one to own this, lol. So where is it regged, New York? Was there any conversion work that you had to have done to register it? Is there a way to finally find out if I can register it in florida. I've wanted this car for the longest time but Brammo just told me the only way to know would be to buy it and try it, this wasnt exactly going to work out for me. Im going to be selling my 430 spyder next week and this would be such a fun second car if I could take it on the road daily.

Okay here's the low down on NY reg for this vehicle. Due to the lack of windshield wipers it will NOT pass NYS Registration - emissions is fine but the wipers are a problem. Therefore if you do register it in NY which you can, your temp inspection will expire and if an inspection station that you "know" gives you a decal that's great, but get pulled over and they get caught for giving it out without you having wipers they are screwed big time! So basically if you want to drive around with no inspection for 2 years you can and then you will not be able to renew in New York without having a valid inspection.

Registering in Florida is perfectly fine if you have dual residency, which I do being a homeowner in Florida as well. You can actually have all of your NY info on the reg/title if you wish, but the insurance rates were a bit less in Florida, a mere $680.00 / year for full coverage. And yes the Insurance company is well aware of the garaging address, but they do only offer up to 6,000 miles / per year, I chose the 3,000 miles per year option, I don't think I will be using it more than that, but if I do I can always up the range. Another savings with Florida is of course the sales tax, 6% vs 8.625%.

Now I have been told that NYS DMV does not recognize the VIN numbers for the Ariel Atom, so if you do choose to title it here it will show as "KITCA" on the title, definition "KIT CAR" which I suspect would devalue it a bit. In Florida it is recognized as an ARIEL ATOM, they have about 8 of then titled/registered in the state.

I ran into this problem with my Smart Car here in NY, but the dealer claims they have finally convinced the DMV, all this time they needed the California Emissions Certification??? Go figure, this is NY but they wanted that? Strange! But then again, its NYS DMV, if it was any easier I would be shocked!

So there you have it - my opinion - FLORIDA REGISTRATION! If you need help let me know, no need to even go to Florida, I have a service that does all of the leg work for about $150.00. You are perfectly fine as long as the insurance company does not want to take a picture of the car in Florida. Everything is done via fedex.

    All the best!

Why can't everyone stop using the word "***" and "homo" ? I am sure you all know what my status and preference is, but guess what I bet that if you took a survey of all the f-chat users you will most likely find a handful of homosexuals. Now the last time I checked this type of "chat" would be considered a disgrace! So let's just keep the tone down on that matter and get back to the topic!

I am about to go to an Airfield and tear it up with my Ariel Atom, so suck wind as I leave you in the dust!
