I am looking for instructions on setting up a 360 Differential and this is what is found in the factory WSM, Image Unavailable, Please Login Any other idea?
As a Jeep owner, I hear about owners replacing diff gearing/etc constantly. I can safely say that if you have never set backlash/pinion depth on a diff before, take it to a pro. This likely isn't the one you want to cut your teeth on (no pun intended). That said, I don't know what your skill level is, just a fair warning if you've never done this before.
@GogglesPisano , here is my present project ... a valve job on a 328. Image Unavailable, Please Login And this was a couple of months ago. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Fun times ahead! This is my present project. I still won't touch a diff Image Unavailable, Please Login
I also found a quick way to check the contact impression of the ring-pinion. I think this is what I need to see where I am... Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
You likely will not find that red lead paint anymore, but here's what is typically used for marking compound: https://www.amazon.com/ACDelco-10-5055-Gear-Marking-Compound/dp/B007Q10TES/ref=sr_1_1?dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.DcY4XZhzjPXunwVXECfPuxHDrTfP6EkpUsG4XckCIaUcHAiS2jdIgvU7RibcdobRmv2upah6oGYejIrwAd4ZsymziRk69i4DQCDvNtN_EMGyPmluUShR9j4tpacQB_Jeq-l949InbxseM2QaHhRKFg5obIDJEMN5-TEdTZA3InB230huWaFOgyg_KoBdS2jh4C9d8nqfy1lprlqpWuStG36tjoJSXhDDcxehfzlN5wNSLB_xPc3TEopoeA2biULgqSvNRN9aDAnnvobvgzdZRjhnZFZnr08Sehy7-y0MpEhmZ3PGI0YrVkaz1X69DZrIJd673DyIp7buYDORkZ9yzcfAvYMelvKfexJyKZCfQZqRiRyJ656xFV5WtWVcGD-LYSsewNlPWhPU1_T9KZ6aIgmqLuf4Vk7KSpwjG-t8SQXrm-GDkdpeD1DnNPMldu41.kiraOf4GQ7XFZ1uOUeHQz8GLA4M6y3qpxe6pt0YireM&dib_tag=se&keywords=gear+marking+compound&qid=1736555233&sr=8-1
Thank you. I will order that stuff. I think what I will find is the backlash is too loose and I will need a thicker shim. I am not sure what to do about that yet if that is the case.
If you are going to get a new oil pump make sure you verify that the oil plunger moves freely in its channel before you install it. I had to go through three before I found a good one on my amc 360.
I was worried about that as well. I can’t remember what brand I went with but it was something run of the mill like crown or Dorman. Seemed good on inspection. I’ll keep an extra eye out though. Thanks for the tip!
Took my Torsen Dana 35 (2000 Ford) to a local off-road shop. They knew how to check. Image Unavailable, Please Login
