Getting ready to set a new set of points on my Ghibli, but, unlike the Chevy's I've worked with before, the distributor shaft doesn't have an octagonal shape with distinct angles to make the points open. How the heck do you set the opening? Is there a way to do this with a dwell meter? Miss my 'Vettes about now. thanx s

    +1.

There are plenty of systems out there. I don't know if Pertronix has a setup for your dizzy.
I used that on my Espada which has 4 sets of points in a single dizzy! That worked well and it it "almost" does show at all.

There's probably a write-up on this somewhere. Are you an MIE member? Give them a call. They have tech tips articles and it's probably covered in one of those. I'm pretty sure that on this car the duals are to reduce the time the points are open and thus give the coil more time to build a field thus better spark. So if you want to keep it all original read up.

Anybox install a Pertronix unit? Do you need to remove the distributor to do so? Thanx s

    Steve,

I emailed Pertronix about a week ago to ask if they offered a system for a Ghibli. They asked me to provide the number on the distributor housing. When I get my car back from the shop, I plan to have a look and see if there is a number to send to Pertronix. I had Pertronix in two previous American cars and it worked flawlessly right out of the box.

Steve give them a call and ask. I just looked and here's the kit listed # 1888.
    I'll bet it does work.
You should probably rermove the dizzy and have it serviced as well as have the advance mechanism and calibration checked anyways so that your car runs it's best. I've never done a Bosch dizzy but ask in the Tech section here. I'm sure someone has.

    Good luck.

I too called Pertronix and it's a 1888, as stated. I'll also have to confirm that I have the distributor they quote (231127004). If I use their coil, the tech guy said I need to remove any resistors. Not sure where these would be or how I'd find them. Help! Thanx s

It sounds like you should probably get some hands on help with this Steve. It might save you a lot of frustration. It's not a terribly difficult project but based upon the questions you're asking it might make it lot more fun and a learning project if you can assist during the installation. The Pertronix coils are fine and quite reasonable. You can eliminate any resistors and capacitors as there are indeed no longer needed. But ... you might want to leave them mounted in place but disconnected to maintain the stock equipment look.

Yep, I've got they guy who got my AC goin' to help on this, and he's great on electrical stuff. I was thinkin' the same thing....adding the coil might change a few things I need to know about. I've put Pertronix in two of my 'Vettes and that necessitated pulling the distributor and a partial disassembly, but this is different. I'll keep the list posted. thanx s

Why not post some pictures of the parts in question. You might want to keep your original Bosch coil or get a fresh one so as to look more original than if you used a Pertronix coil. It works fine with the Bosch coils. A lot oguys use those. I used the Pertronix ones because they have a near identical form, I can easily paint them the correct color, put a reproduction label on they will look very like authentic Marelli coils which are harder to find.

The Ghibli came with a Bosch coil which was painted satin black. The problem with changing the coil is the connections on the replacement coil will most likely be different from the Bosch push on connectors, which will require modifying the wiring harness (ouch). Keep the original coil and and see how the car runs before replacing the coil. I have done several conversions and kept the original coil. I have used Cranecams and perhaps the Pertronix unit is different.

What year Ghibli are you working on? Does it have the Bosch ignition booster?

The car is a '67 (#616) and I think the coil is Bosch (didn't look at the brand). Pertronix tech said in order to use their coil (oil filled) I'd need to dc my ballast resistor. May stick with the original coil, but not sure yet. Did manage to get a 95A alternator, so that problem is solved. While I've got you guys on the line, how hard is it to replace the dash cap? Material? Anyone besides super expensive Reorginals have it? Hard to do? thanx s

The dash top comes out relatively easy on the Ghibli (unlike the Bora). It is held by only 4 nuts. Try MIE for the mouse hair. You need to find an upholsterer than can make a nice straight stitch. I have seen many redone dash caps with wavy stitches.

OK, I got the car running after installing the Pertronix 1888. It requires some modification, but not too bad. It is a series I and I disconnected the ballast resistor, tho' it's still in place. I replaced my coil, which was a NAPA, not a Bosch, so no harm there. I used solid core wires that I made (Accel 7mm). The installation of the Pertronix requires much timing advance, and it took me awhile to figure that out. I'll post details, if anyone is interested. steve
