Ok, i'm impatient and brazenly stupid, so i went ahead and opened up Outlook Express and tried setting it up by myself... i entered the information it asked for and viola! i send myself a test message from my gmail account, hit send/receive in Outlook and i get an error...

Why do i get an error, 'cause i told Outlook that the name of my outgoing server (POP3) was "POP3"; and that the name of the incoming server (SMTP) was "SMTP" - i figured it was that simple...!

Apparently it's not... Now i don't know how to find the names of the outgoing and incoming servers and, if i ever DO find them, i don't know how to change the names i already put in during set up...!

Aren't you folks glad i'm not in the military, protecting the country...? :)

I wish it were that simple. First off, you need to find out what the servers are. We can't help you with that. For me it's (incoming: mail.comcast.net; outgoing: smtp.comcast.net. Everyones' different. AIM me at STIrampage if you need some more help, and I might be able to get you the server info, if you like.

i don't have AIM, AOL or any of those other things...

i followed the directions here and now when i hit send/receive, it says it's connecting and whatever but then a window pops up - already with my logon information filled in - so i just hit enter and it pops back up again... So i hit enter and it goes away and pops back up, then i hit enter, it goes away, it pops back up, enter, away, come back; enter, away, come back; enter, away, come back - it's a vicious cycle, here... & it's not getting me anywhere...

I'm not a computer guy, but I did stay at a holiday inn express last night.

In order to get gmail account messages in outlook, gmail would have to give you the exact name of the incoming and outgoing mail servers.

I use gmail too, but I didn't find anywhere that they disclosed the servers.

Usually, web hosted email accounts won't give you the server names, because it would result in people using outlook, like you want to do.

Nobody logging into their website = no advertising dollars.

Try using the "Gmail notifier." It's a pretty unintrusive background-running application that pops up a message as soon as you get a new gmail.

Go to the upper right hand of your gmail inbox screen and click settings, go to the bottom of that page and click the "Get gmail notifier" link.

Whatever you do, then, don't stay at an Inn Town Suites - it's making me stupider and stupider everyday... :)

This isn't for gmail, this is for an email address i have, that's associated with my website... www.carbonmccoy.com, [email protected]... i usually go to webmail.perfora.net to check the mail but i want to reroute it into Outlook Express, because webmail.molasses.net is slower than perfora... :)

Here's the answer, straight from Gmail.

How can I access Gmail from another email provider, or access other email accounts from Gmail?

While Gmail doesn't currently offer the ability to access your messages from other email providers (such as Outlook, Eudora, Entourage or Thunderbird), or to retrieve messages sent to other email accounts through Gmail (with POP3 or IMAP), Google believes in helping people access information whenever and however they want to do so.

We are testing many new features to improve the Gmail service. In the future you will be able to access Gmail messages from non-Gmail accounts for free, or at a nominal fee.

So, Carbon, my fine friend, you are S.O.L. for now.

In that case, talk to your internet hosting company. You pay them (i presume) to host your web and email servers. Their tech support people should be able to give those server names to you in seconds.

Ok, ask your web provider for the stmp and POP3 addresses for these.

You could putz around and try a couple of combinations.

    mail.carbonmccoy.com for both
    just carbonmccoy.com for both

    or use the pop3.carbonmccoy.com
    and smtp.carbonmccoy.com

that may, or may not, get you there.

Carbon, you're using 1and1 to host your website?

I use them too, and the servers you use are:

    smtp.1and1.com
    pop.1and1.com

The trick is that your login is not your e-mail address. Your email address should have an alphanumeric username associated with it. You can find this on 1and1's web-based control panel.

i'm trying to use Carbon as my username; not [email protected], just 'Carbon'; still, i get rejected... When that window kept popping up, i even tried using [email protected], but to no avail...

What makes this worse is that as soon as i figure out how to do it, i have to do it on the another computer, with a completely different email address and web hosting company... Is it pretty much the same once i figure it out, right...?

As much as I loathe the tech support people on the other end of 1800 numbers, (because I know they loathe me too... :) ), I will have to suggest you contact your web hosting company's tech support people.

Yes, it would be the same procedure, just different mail server addresses, username, and password.

The username ought to be what you use to log in to the web-based account. Password should be the same as what you put in to log in to the web-based account.

Check the timeout value and increase it to see if that helps. Go to Tools, Email Accounts, select View or Change, select your mail account, click on Change, then click on More Settings... then on the Advanced tab, and then move the slider.

If that does not help, search on support.microsoft.com -- I seem to remember a registery key needed fixing or deleting for this.

ok I found that your hosting company is indeed 1and1...
the smtp server (outgoing server) is: smtp.1and1.com
    pop3 (incoming) is : pop.1and1.com
now the tricky part is that for username you must use a "mailbox number", which can be found under "email overview". The password is your email password.

I just realized that Mike had answered your question, anyways for ICGLink, the info is:

    incoming (pop3): mail.yourdomain.com
    outgoing (smtp): mail.yourdomain.com
    username: [email protected]
    password: yourpassword

I think you have to be a subscribed user or there are restrictions such as being only allowed to use Outlook Express. Instructions are on the Yahoo! site.

Ok, i'm working on the ICGLink acct right now, 'cause it's more important; i did exactly as you listed, but still no dice... The @#$%ing thing keeps popping up when i hit send/receive, asking me for login information - which is already filled in... i hit enter and it just pops right back up... No sending, no receiving...

Absolutely not...!!! Thank you, but i like my gmail just the way it is... i want my [email protected] stuff to go to Outlook and, more importantly, i'm trying to get this ICGLink thing to work - the ICGLink is the main thing here, i was just using my [email protected] as a test mule to see if i could figure out how to do it...
