Hi everybody, it looks my 308 GTS #28007# has (probaly) fittted a 308GT4 engine instead of a 308 GTS engine. I would like to exchange it. It probably (a write "probably" as I'm waiting for an official written confirmation by my mechanic, who is Toni Auto shop at Maranello, Italy) belonged to 308 GT4 chassis number #13160#, sold in December 1976 in Belgium by Garage Francorchamps. The engine number is F106A 020 1976, the gearbox number is F106AL1993. Both look to be matching with 308 GT4 #13160#.

The engine is now disassembled at Toni Auto shop, Maranello, Italy, to fix a valve seats problem. It will be fixed and reassembled during this winter, and now it is out of the car and waiting for fixing during this winter.

I would like to exchange it with an engine and a gearbox coming from a 308 GTS. The exchange will be done once my engine will be fixed by Toni Auto shop: there will be the invoices of the works done, of course.

I'm asking here also if you could have any other idea, as I don't like to have a 308 GTS with a 308 GT4 engine even if the differences between the two engines are very very low and the engine actually is the same.

What would you do, if you were me? Does anyone here know where 308 GT4 #13160# now is?

    Thank you

    Ciao

Alberto, a lot of variables here, but this would be my thought process if I were in your shoes:
    1) What are my my goals with the car: Nice Driver? Concours condition? As it left the Factory?
    a) If I wanted a Councours car would deductions be made for having the GT4 engine?
    b) Are there differences between a '78 GTS and '78 GT4 engine?
    c) If I wanted a nice driver, do I want a stock or modified engine, or maybe a 328 swap?
    2) How much money do I want to throw at it? Obviously depends on answers to the questions above.
    3) If I wanted the car to be in its as-born condition, how feasible is it to find the engine the car was born with?
Obviously would be intersting to know how the switch occured and what happened to the original engine from your car.
    Best of luck,
    Dave

The GTS was fresly restored in factory specs and it's very nice everywhere: the last owner didn't tell me anything about the engine swap and it's very hard to see that's a GT4 engine at first sight. I still don't know which differences there are between the two engines (in any case they are minimal, the engine basically is exactly the same) and the power output is identical.

I ask here if anyone can help me to find differences between a '76 and a '79 engine, as basically differences are that the GT4 engine I have is three years older than the GTS engine I should have: I will upgrade the ignition to the original twin coils ignition the '79 GTS had.

    What else?

I want a driver, but I want a very nice driver as well.

    Thank you all

    Photo 2 in post 1 shows engine number F106A 020 *01976*.
Text in post 1 mentions engine number F106A 020 1976. The zero before the 1976 is missing.
Dino 308 GT4 #13160 was completed 15 December 1976 but the factory (most probably due to the poor economy/recession/war/speed limit/oil crisis) was unable to sell the car. It was stored at the factory for 11 months.
The factory then invoiced Garage Francorchamps 11 November 1977, trucked it together with five other new Ferraris on 30 December 1977 to Belgium but Garage Francorchamps were also unable to sell Dino 308 GT4 #13160, it took them one full year until it was sold (to a dealer) on 11 December 1978. A two year old brand new car.

Thank you for the very interesting story, Marcel: really nice, 308 GT4 were "unsoldable" at those times and Ferrari did a lot of tricks and efforts to sell them. You can read an amusing story about that at page 32 of my book "Ferrari by Schedoni" you have at home, a very nice story told by Ferrari former sale department executive Carlo Tazzioli: it looks even incredible and involves Dino 208 GT4 too, explaining why the 208 GT4 kept the "Dino" brand and not switched to Ferrari brand as the 308 GT4 did. Ferrari did really every kind of efforts in trying to sell the poorly loved - but excellent- 308 GT4. This said, thank you for sharing a classified Ferrari document. It would be interesting to know if GT4 #13160 really had that engine, as what I got are only unofficial info. For example this morning I learned something that maybe is much less important for Ferrari story, but it's much more important for me: F106A020 engine type is the same type as Factory 308 GTS engine in 1979: this below is my car official DOT document and it shows "F106A020" as engine type, as you can see at "P.5" line. I called local Ferrari dealership and I asked if -with that engine installed - I could have the Classiche red book and they answered: "yes, a F106A020 is the correct engine for a 308 GTS, so we can give the red book. If the engine number won't match the assembly sheet of your #28007 car, there will be a red line telling that the engine has been replaced, but it still is the correct type for your car.

This for me is enough: I just stopped the search two hours ago, I will keep my engine and will only service it to have it running again.
