As I sit here and watch it for the 50th time, I wonder to myself how on earth this masterpiece of a film didn't win the oscar for best picture. Forrest Gump was indeed a great movie, but IMO, Shawshank is the best movie of all time (Godfather a very close 2nd) and certainly better than Forrest Gump.

The Shawshank Redemption is tied for my absolute favorite movie of all time along with Amadeus. It is brilliant!

i was a huge amadeus fan back when. but i havent' found it to stand the test of time, personally.

but i concur - morgan freeman's acting is just perfect. i can't imagine him improving upon it. tim robbins acting is damn near perfect. and so on and so forth. it's a stupendously well done movie.

    doody.

Awesome flick. I have seen it about 30 times! Just one of those movies you can enjoy once a month!

I would probably watch "Shawshank" every time it came on, but my wife hates it when I watch the same movies over and over. She particularly hates it when I try to watch "Hombre" for the umpteenth time. Don't know why.....

I've seen "Shawshank" once, maybe 10 yrs. ago but do remember it well--very excellent and worth another viewing.

I usually forget mediocre movies and have been known to rent the same thing twice, not realizing I've seen it before until it's run 10 min. or so.

I plan to revisit Eastwood's "Unforgiven" in the near future. Another superb movie from the early-mid 1990's.

"Amadeus"--saw it in theater when it was first released, very good but a little tedious at times.

And I thought I was the only one that loved that movie. Watch it every time it's played on TBS and had to go buy the DVD. Best movie ever. Girlfriend hates the fact that I can recite entire lines being spoke during the movie.

Totally agree! If my memory serves me.......I think it ran up against Schindlers List at the Oscars. Its funny how I could watch Shawshank over and over again.........and have. But I have only been able to watch Schinders List once.....at the theaters......and cannot bring myself to watch it again!

Shawshank, Saving Private Ryan, and Man on Fire are the top 3 movies for me. But Shawshank has a giagantic lead on on the other two.

Argh, I get this all the time too. The thing that kills me is that she can be not even watching it with me, she'll be on the computer or reading a book, and still I get: "Haven't you seen this before?"

Yes I have and why do you care if I want to watch it again?!

I agree with you guys - Shawshank is one of those movies (along with Hunt for Red October that I can watch over and over again; which is strange because normally I can't bear to watch a movie more than once. Still remember how odd I thought it was when I was a kid and would hear about those guys who had seen Star Wars 200 times....

I keep telling myself to rent Schindler's List, but I fear it would be too upsetting.

I'm sure Shawshank's "Sisters" would love to spend some time with Forrest Gump in the laundry room...

There're many movies which didn't win Oscar, but still stands great after time has passed. Truly, Shawshank is one of them.

I think winning Oscar requires more than just being a GOOD movie now. Studios have to promote it, a movie need to be shown in theaters the right period, & expose a movie to many members using words of mouth & through media. Also, social situation at time will reflect Oscar winning, too.

It's just too bad these excellent movies didn't win Oscars, but they will stand in time as great films, and people like you will spread words. Same thing cannot be said for some Oscar won movies.
