Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupe Expected to Break Auction Records

8 figures, why not. A fairly equivelant car to the Ferrari GTO and much more rare.

Even if the 8 figures proves to be "correct", it would still not be "right" - at least by my reasoning.

Especially if it happened to be the Phil Specter car...

 

An iconic car, fabulous shape, great competition history...just wish I could have a real one...at the moment a 1:18 model is going to have to do...

 

I'm pretty sure this isn't the Spector car; I think that car was CSX2287.

 

I believe it's from Harley Cluxton's collection...... Vintage Motorsport Jan/Feb 2009 pg. 36.......

 

2287 is currently in a collection of a doctor in Philadelphia. That one has such a crazy history I'd be surprised if it didn't get those numbers.

My favorite car ever built being auctioned off right now, and I don't have a penny to bid on it.

its CSX 2601. It was the car that was featured in the magazine that was spoke of earlier

 

That one is in Dr. Simone's collection in PA, and not leaving anytime for the foreseeable future.

that one for auctioned has quite a racing history with it, being Bondurant's car for the 1965 Reims race

no sale at 6.8 million. almost no action on the car.

 

The car was never "really" for sale, there was (to my understanding) an appearance fee paid to the owner and a high reserve so only if the big whales were out they might be nibbling but the whales are in italy this week.

It had the proper effect as we are talking about mecam's auction...

 

That's alot of marketing for a car that was not for sale. I just don't buy it......Hey, take my prized car and put it on morning shows, plaster it all over the place buddy, but it's not for sale.........sounds a little strange to me.

Rumors I heard were that Dana owned at least part of the car (like RM and the GS Vette) and it was for sale, thus all the effort behind the actual potential sale.

I need something that will get all the morning shows and evening news broadcasts to give me millions and millions of dollars worth of free exposure for my piddley little auction that is trying to brake into the big time collector car market... Lets See Barrett's uses every poss plug on Speed, Rm has Discovery HD, so how do I get that kind of respect with out paying for it


Up till the last 2 years Mecum was about as respected as the local used car Mannheim auction... He is tryin to play with the big boys Like RM, Christies, Butter's, Russo, WWG. and the Juggernaut of Craig Jackson's smoke and mirror three ring circus.

Agree, great line-up. Folks who shop this sort 'o stuff know that Mecum's been (quietly?) bringing out some of the rarest of the rare factory muscle and race cars for a while now. Would guess the Daytona Coupe was/is for sale.

 

I was in attendance most of today and was very impressed not only with the quality of the cars but also by the huge amounts of money being bid for these cars. Were the bids real? I don't know, but it made for a good show.

 

I don't disagree with Writerguy about Mecum's game plan. However, the purpose of an auction is to sell things. From that standpoint, Mecum's Friday night prime time, with the cars that garnered all the pre-auction hype, was a total bust and certainly didn't do anything, IMO, to make someone looking to sell a similar car in the future consign it to Mecum:

I was there most of the day on Wednesday and Thursday. It was my first time at a Mecum sale. I've been at all the other major car auction venues several times.

I have to say that I was very surprised by and pleased with the courtesy, professionalism and overall helpfulness of their staffing. They were far superior to the other car auctions I've been to.

They had a HUGE number of cars there. Of course some were absolute junk, most were what I would consider to be daily driver to show-n-shine quality cars; but I was absolutely shocked by the number of truly exceptional cars that were being offered there. They had FAR more genuinely high quality cars for sale than I've seen before in any one venue. In my opinion, they had too many cars in one sale and that probably diluted the pool of potential buyers. Let's face it, the muscle car market isn't as hot as it was a year or two ago (but what market is?). I think that many people who wished they had sold their car last year decided to put it here with hopes of achieving last year's price for it. Many of them ended up taking their overpriced cars back home again. Sellers who brought good quality cars with realistic reserves sold their cars, and some did extremely well in my opinion.

I'm extremely happy with the car that I bought yesterday and I bought it well within the range that I expected to pay for it.

Are there games being played there? Probably. There are at most auctions. (not just car auctions) But at the end of the day, in my opinion; they ran a very good auction and I would be happy to do business with them again.
