I know its a strange question, but are there any limitations as to the performance of fully synthetic motor oil that has been stored in an unconditioned space for a long time (multiple years).

I have made bulk purchases in the past and wanted expert opinions as to the safety of continuing to use oil that is somewhat aged.

Thanks for all and any opinions,

    GS

I believe I have read on the Mobil site that they consider syn oil to be good for 3 or 4 years. Take that with a grain of salt as 1. I am no tribologist and 2. an entity with a vested interest in selling more oil might not be the best source of information on this topic.

I am sure 3 yrs is fine. It's sealed so does not mix with air and moisture. It should be out of direct sun or heat.

Older than that, you aren't putting the best oil in your car anyways. Formula changes every year or so. You want the latest and greatest.

I buy about 2 yrs worth of oil in bulk when there is a great sale.
