I recently got a couple of new quarts of Helix from the dealer that had a date of March '02 stamped on the bottle. So, according to my calculations it's over 2 years old already.(plus the billion or so years to convert to oil ;) ) If I'm getting 2 year old oil and putting that in my car doesn't that belittle the once a year oil change thing?(based on time not miles) Does oil in a car really go bad that much quicker or is a once a year change just a myth that manufacturers would like you to believe?
    TIA.

It's helpful but doesn't answer the question of whether a once a year change is really necessary? It looks like the answer may be, "it depends."

Well, one way to find out if once/year intervals are necessary is to get an oil analsysis done (i.e. from Blackstone Labs). They can determine what your used oil's Total Base Number. Of course, TBN changes as driving habits change.

dude, oil's cheap. change early and often. it's one of the few things most of us can do on these beasts ourselves. oil in the engine is subject to lots of bad things that it's free from in the bottle.
