Time for a service to my 1988.5 Testarossa having covered nearly 5000 kms since February. I've been recomended to use SHELL HELIX ULTRA 5W-40 as it's been sprecifically designed by Shell for Ferrari engines, and although the Shell listing doesn't go back beyond 1993, it's recomended for the 512TR and 512M with essentially the same engine. Has anyone used the new generation of Shell oils. and in particular, the Helix Ultra 5W-40 in their Testarossa's? If not, what's the oil of choice for you guys? ANd whilst we are on the subject, for the gearbox Shell suggests SHELL TRANSAXLE 75W/90. Opinions and / or suggestions?
Hey, This topic comes up quite a bit, which is probably why no replies so far. No problem, just try the search feature when you get a chance. My F dealer puts the Shell Helix 5W40 in my TR, no probs at all with it so far.
I never used anything other than Shell Helix Ultra in my '88 Testarossa. After each service, I was given two 'gifts' from the servicing department: a bottle of rain repellent for the windscreen, and a litre of Shell Ultra.
If you are serious about this question as in what are ALL the options you need to do a Search on oil. IMO some of the best material written for car users from garage queens to pro competition has been aired on this site over the last 3 years. The basic facts seem to indicate that all quality oils will protect. The question is against what and that all depends on you, the conidtions and the type of car to YMMV from one scenario to another. $50 million plus in sponsorship says that Ferrari must recommend Shell products after that its up to you.
Ferrari did not "specify" Shell oil until 1996 as Michael Schumacher joints the team, with part of his paycheck being paid for by Shell. Prior to that, all Ferraris were using Agip oil from the factory. My point is, and this topic has been brought back to life many many times, is that as long as you are using synthetics with the correct weight, and the engine has had major service performed with the gaskets replaced, you will be fine. I and many others here uses Mobil 1, 0W-40 being the most optimal for my region of the country for normal street use. IMHO, the "specific" Shell oil "recommended" by Ferrari is way too expensive and for no reason at all. Mobil 1 and Redline have both been very popular among the Tifosi.
The base stock used in Helix ultra is the same base stock used in the 5w-40 Rotella T synthetic available at Walmart. Additives are a bit beefier in the Rotella T due to its' deisel specification. Great for flat tappet motors IMO. I ran the stuff in my 911 every time I changed my oil. Oil consumption was very low with that oil due to a very high flash point and great viscosity index. Have not ran it in my 308, but I will at the next change.
