Sorry if this is a dumb question but it bugs the hell out of me to see shields on cars that didn't come with them originally. Can those aftermarket shields be safely removed and if so, how?

    Thanks,

    Rich

Oh I'm just asking in general terms, no car in particular. Say a 328 for example.

I'm told it can be done with dental floss. (That's only with the cars that did not have the indentation in the bodywork to accommodate the shields, but you're talking about cars that didn't come with them from the factory.)

Sure, if they're self-adhesive sticker back things. They typically de-badge cars using a heat gun to soften the adhesive... debadged my Cayenne that way...

Okay thanks. I didn't know if that would wreck the paint or not.

And the badges look great on the wall of my man room. Plus there is one for the owner and one for a close friend. Or better yet, one for a young child who expresses interest in the car.

I used a very thin fishing line and had no problems, do it slowly and they come off easier if they are hot.

Rather than a heat gun, use a hair dryer. Heat guns can get very hot and destroy the paint if you're not careful.

Rich if you own a car with them on you can just peel them off and use goog gone to remove the adhesive. If you don't own a car with them on then just don't look at them or get some counseling.

They come with 3M double sided tape (both factory and aftermarket) and it is VERY strong. Warming up with a heat gun is how I remove the factory ones (after removing the redundant nuts and washers on back side). Then use a plastic spatula along with some fishing line if needed.

Absolutely! Heat and fishing line or dental floss worked great for me. I like the wall suggestion above. My old ones are now badges on my tool cabinets. They look great there and are quite appropriate, given the car is what made me massively increase my tool collection. Definitely helped the look and appearance of the garage. Much more cohesive appearance now. lol

I just did this, so let me post an important tip. When you use dental floss or fishing line, just get it under one corner and pull up. Do not try to run the string all the way behind it. Dirt gets trapped around the edges, and if you drag the string under it pushed the dirt around and scratched pretty bad. That's what happened when I removed the first one. On the second, I just barely get under it on a corner and pulled. No scratched at all.

Also, I used 3M adhesive remover. Worked fine, and did not damage the paint.

Or,...are you planning a "vigilante" campaign, going around removing badges, from cars, that you feel shouldn't be there? (Not that I'm necessarily condemning such an action)

3M General Purpose Adhesive Remover would be a useful product to have on hand. It won't hurt paint, and it will loosen the adhesive quite nicely. I would definitely trust it over Goo-Gone.

So I take it that it's bad form to add non-factory shields to a car that didn't come with them? It's just so tempting because the shields are as much a signature as the prancing horse on the rear grille......Obviously owners can tell but 99% of the public won't know it's not factory.

It's your car and you do what you want to do with it...I personally don't like the shields but I offend Ferrarista sensibilities in other ways....I even put Chrome wheels on mine...LOL ;=)

Exactly what I did to remove the vinyl shields on my fenders.

And I used 3M Adhesive Remover to get rid of the adhesive film left on the paint. Worked great ... no damage to paint.

I then installed shields from Yoshi!
