It strikes me that they are overkill and the color detracts from the line of the front fenders. Do you really need to advertise that much that you have an F-car considering the rest of it?

Not advertising, ordering them because I like them and they do not "detract from the line..." (in my opinion).
Besides, nothing to be ashamed of by having Scuderia shields....

Never have. I think silver is the best color with them IMO.

Personally, I wouldn't order without them. I have them on my F430 and really do think they add to the overall style of the car.

F430 coming without shields. Previous 360 had no shields. 599 will not have shields. Unavoidable with CS. Acceptable on "super" Ferraris, and of course Ferraris with a genuine SF history.

Shields indicate that the car has campaigned for Scuderia Ferrari. It has a rich history and it is a symbol of that car's heritage. I wouldn't want a "Purple Heart" or "POW" license plate on my car for the same reason; I haven't earned the privilege to emblazon my vehicle with such a claim.

I don't have a problem with others ponying up the $1500 or so because they think they look pretty; I'd just prefer that my cars don't have them. I too enjoy my car's lines more without the badges there.

Thanks. I don't think Ferrari have ever made a car that doesn't look good in red. Some cars might look better (depending on whose eyes are doing the viewing) in other colors, but red on a Ferrari will always be timeless.

Someone chastised me the other day on the forum for talking about going badge-less and the impact on resale. That has to be the lamest excuse ever. Buy the car for *you* -- exactly how you want it; no more, no less. If someone doesn't want to buy my car after I've enjoyed it, that's their problem -- not mine ;-)

I'm a huge fan of Ferraris in red. I think most Ferraris belong in red, contrary to others who claim it's a cliché.

But I don't agree that EVERY Ferrari looks good in red. Not in bright red (like Rosso Corsa) anyway. Take for the example cars like the 456 GT and 612 Scaglietti. I think both of these belong in more muted or darker colors, like dark or medium blue.

As for the shields, I agree more or less with BritBlaster's take on it. Historically speaking, of course he's right. The rectangular badge appears on the nose of all Ferrari cars (road or race, including the F1 cars). But the shield is the emblem of the racing team.

Recently I find the factory has been making a more direct correlation between the road cars and the racing cars. Cars like the 430 and the 599 demonstrate an obvious link to Ferrari's racing cars. They look good with the shield on the fender. Again, as with the red, it doesn't quite suite a car like the 612S, though.

    i compleetly agree.
i mean maybe i have a tainted view of car sales but i thought you were supposed to buy a car YOU liked. not a car someone will like when you're ready to part with it.

    Paul,

Have to disagree on this one.
The Boano, Ellena, SA, 275 GTS, 330GTS, 330GT...are a few that have more subdued body lines which I do not think red goes well on.
But that was probably unfair as I know you were being polite and are a more modern Ferrari enthusiast while I like the vintage stuff.

Scott, color is a very personal thing, and thankfully Ferrari doesn't *force* you to buy red ;-)
I personally would be very thankful to Mr Clause if he delivered me a 275 GTS in red this Christmas. (I *love* the vintage stuff, I just can't afford what I'd like .... and by then I'd be scared to death to drive it!)

I think that they have become a trend and for a value conscious buyer important, but I think they are much more than that. They are an insignia which harks back the 50s when they were used to badge the race cars, and represents where ferrari came from. I think they are great for that reason. All of the old race cars had them.

Not all vintage racers have the shields. Factory race cars have them. Scuderia Ferrari Alfas have them. Some privateers do, some don't. A lot of restored race cars have them painted on, but you'd have to check period photos to see if they had them originally.

I won't order a Ferrari with shields. Don't need the extra bling factor to detract from clean body lines. Plus, I didn't earn them (call me traditionalist, fundamentalist, whatever). No choice on the supercars and the Challenge Stradale.

It also removes part of the "manacing factor"
    that black Fcar owners enjoy
