Is it possible to replace and fit the shift shaft rod with the engine in the car (87 TR)? Part No. 123217 - rear gearbox control rod.

My misunderstanding -- by "shift shaft" thought that you meant item 6.

After removing bolt #27, with the gearbox in 2nd and the shifter in 3rd, I think that you'd have enough room to unthread #43 from #28 (but haven't done it myself).

Is your #43 damaged/broken? Not a piece that anyone has reported replacing before...

Yes you can remove # 43 from #28 with removal of bolt #27. Ive had mine apart. But if you loose track of what gear the selector in the gearbox is in, you will not have fun finding correct gears again. ( don't ask me how I know). Like Steve said put the gearbox in 2nd gear and don't move it out .

This is the first time that I removed the engine from my 87 TR. It’s really simple to disconnect everything and pull the engine out but I made a mistake that is really embarrassing. I have followed instructions and shifted into 2nd, removed bolt at the yoke and then shifted into 3rd. However, I didn’t pay close attention to the shift rod during engine removal so shift rod is little bent and should be replaced. For the same not to happened again I’m thinking to first reinstall engine and then install rod since will be a lot easier this way. Gearbox in already in 2nd gear and shifter in 3rd and I hope that everything will be OK.

Dean, the rod is not a stressed part so if you can bend it straight while in situ it will be much easier to refit later. I have loads of photos somewhere on my Mac if it helps, let me know.

    Dean,
I did the same thing removing my engine in my 87 TR. From now on I will remove the shifter rod when I pull again.A little caution if you loose the position your gearbox is in. Keep the rear wheels up on secure stands. After you start the motor go through all the gears including reverse. I been through this and ended up with 2nd gear was reverse. So when you think you have all the shifting adjusted watch which direction the wheels move when you leave out the clutch. I had to use a large mirror working by myself. If you never move the gearbox out of 2nd gear there is nothing to worry about. If you loose gear orientation it is not that difficult to get it correct. just remember the gear selector in the trans moves very little side to side in neutral. After I changed the rear shifter rod bushing, and readjusted the linkage the car shifted better than before.

Thank you all. Seal ring #47 must be replaced and hopefully this repair will not move the gearbox out of 2nd gear.
