Ok, I have the shifter assembly out, both pans off, and both shafts on the bench to replace the bushings. I purchased the new replacement bushings from Verell along with the tools. I successfully removed the old bushings but when installing the new ones they just slid in without any force and are not 'pressed' in like the old ones. Finger pressure alone moves the new bushing in and out. Is this normal? I have an email in to Verell but he's prolly off for the weekend and I'd like to start putting things back together.

I pressed Verrell's bushings in by hand when I replaced mine. It has worked fine since.

    Had to press mine in.

We are talking Delrin bushings, right?

Thx guys and yes, these are the new delrin bushings from Verell. I read RobzWorkz thread again and it seems he had to press his in also. My new bushings slide freely where the old ones were locked (pressed) in place. I certainly don't want to do this job again.

Though I have replaced mine with the original ones, I would like to mention, that if the bushing allows the fork moving sideways, both metal parts can touch each other, causing annoying noises.

    Best Regards

I've put Verell's bushings in two QVs. Both required the force of a bench vise to press the part in. Sounds like you've got something that's not in spec. Do you have calipers to measure both parts?

    Hello Mike,
The delrin bushings should be at least a light press fit into the shaft's eye. Should not go in with just finger pressure.

Was the thru-bolt a fairly firm press fit? If so, it may have expanded the bushing enough to that it won't slide in the shift shaft eye. It's surprising how much pressing the thru bolt in expands the bushing.

Test is to see if the shaft eye can slide on the bushing once the joint is assembled. If you can't slide the eye by hand, then you are OK.

If not, then we need to get you some that work in your car.

Could you measure your old bushings so I can check their size against my current inventory?

I'll get my loaned caliper back and measure these. Tomorrow I plan to change the seals, insert the shaft into the cases then attach the two shift rods with the new bushing. I'll report back if it still moves and the measurements. Thx!

A follow up: I installed the new quad seals, replaced the shift rod back into the engine with the help of a socket, reinstalled the shifter then connected the two via the bushings. As per Verell the bushings did lock into place after tightening the forks. Spent today tweaking the fork to make it perfect then buttoned everything up. Tomorrow I'll add lubes, then finish up a brake line replacement and flush, put the interior back together and report back after a test drive. Thanks everyone for the help,

I'm glad to hear that the thru-bolt expanded it sufficiently.

We just measured a sample of the bushings. They were at the low end of the tolerance range, so if your shaft eye's ID is on the high side the fit will be as Conchyjodyoos reports.

Just a note, my tolerance range was adjusted about 5 years ago to allow for expansion due to the thru-bolt. I had to do this after people reported great difficulty installing the thru-bolt. Many were having to sand out the ID in order to get the bolt thru.
