    Hi guys,

I can't get the shift shaft out because the shifting relay rod is in the way, I removed the adjusting nut/buckle from the relay rod, but still have interference issue, no matter how I moved the shift shaft and shifting relay rod around, the shift shaft is still about 2.5 inches inside the engine). Now I can undestand the need for lifting the front of engine about .5 inch. How do you safely lift the engine up? Can someone please share the procedure?

I thought about removing the the shifting relay rod but what I see, the bolt that holds the rod is inside the carbin, maybe more trouble than it worths?

This is a shift shaft seal job on an '89' 328

    Thank you in advance.

Pull the two front motor mount bolts, youll be able to jack up the front of the motor enough to gain clearance.

Thanks! Where would be a safe jack point?

I will preface by saying I am an amateur. I put a block of wood under a floor jack and put the jack under the gear box / oil pan. I loosened all four motor mounts though it is those front ones that matter.

At the time I was not trying to work on the shift shaft. From my research here I recall being advised you could lift the motor one inch, maybe two. In either case I went *very* slowly and was able to remove the front motor mounts without lifting too much.

Put a 2x4 long enough to cover the width of the engine on the jack, and bring it up on the oil pan. I'd loosen the rear motor mounts a bit also. Lift the engine very slowly and make sure that it's not shifting and not hitting anything or pulling anything apart. If you are only going up 1/2", it should not be that bid a deal.

    Hello,
Please check this out but I am sure I have read 2nd gear has to be engaged on removal.I have not had to remove mine yet so cannot confirm but it may worth doing a detailed search.
    Regards, Tom.

I think when you're in 3rd gear, the shifting relay linkage moves toward the front of the car, so you have more space to get the shift shaft out. You put it in 2nd gear when you reinstall your shift shaft. Am I missing something???

To whom had done this before, where would prefer to tilt your engine? Back or front? Do I need to unbolt the cat?

    Thanks.

Lift at the front. If you put a spacer under the front of each mount, you can get the jack out of your way and have room to work, shouldnt need much more than 3/8 inch or so to get the 1/2 inch you need. The small amount your moving the engine shouldnt be any concern to anything, it should all flex enough to be no problem and you shouldnt need to disconnect anything. Just keep a watchful eye as you lift to be absolutely sure. If your deeply concerned you could always crack some of the exhaust bolts loose so it wont bind as much, but I really dont believe its necessary.

I lifted the whole thing somewhere between one and two inches. It was enough I could remove the front motor mounts. I loosened up the rear motor mounts too and the stabilizer at the top of the motor.

So, it can be done. To be sure it can be done without concern to the exhaust, just support the motor, move very slowly, and be careful.
