Ok, so I spent a weekend cleaning 25 years of gunk off my 86 328.
Over, under and side to side that engine looks great....however-
There is oil leaking down the front of the engine above the trans pan.
My ferrari guy told me that this is an inherent issue with 308/328 models.

Is there a way to change the seals and stop the leak WITHOUT-
Draining engine and trans oil, pulling both pans, pulling out the shifter shaft, obviously replacing the seals (I'm assuming there are two), then puting it all back together
    And adding the necess. fluids?

Also, What would be a reasonable price for a shop to do this as well?

Sorry. There isn't. It's an easy job but very time intensive.

The outside seal holds the engine oil in and is at almost the bottom of the sump, so you'll be draining the oil either intentionally or unintentionally. I believe a pro mechanic here said he does it without removing the shaft from the motor, so if you're good - and considerably better than I am - perhaps you don't need to mess with the transmission oil and pan to do just the front seal.

If the seal on the outside has gone, the chances are the one on the other side may be leaking as well.

Symptom of that is excess oil in the gearbox. Get the car up & level & remove the gearbox fill plug. If oil comes out then you need to do the job soon-ish. Engine oil in the gearbox isn't the best idea.....

There are several write ups on it. Its not that difficult, but takes a while.

Replacing those seals (Do one? Do BOTH.) ain't hard, but it is a HUGE PITA.

    In my opinion.

I just did both seals on mine, believe me, it's worth it.

Andrew: a highly skilled and experienced mechanic with all the proper facilities and tools should take about 6-7 hours of labor to do this.

Outside only,, can be done with motor in the car.
You should count the threads on your shift shaft.
    Next, you
Have to remove the metal ring that holds the seal in place.
Grease up the new seal good, slide it on.
Replace that metal ring,, peen it in place.
    Realign the shift rod.
    Done.

    Have a lift, use it.
Put the car on said lift, jack it up to standing height
Drain oil from car, drain gear box fluid.
Remove oil pan, remove gear box oil pan. Take very good notes of where the 3 detent springs and balls go and do not lose them in the process
Disconnect the shift rod from the shifter shaft, and disconnect the shift rod from inside the transmission. Take very good notes, pictures, and marking.
Use a pick to remove the orings (seal) from the shift shaft bores
Buy the new seals from a member on this board before you start this process. Then install the new seals.
(If that procedure does not work for you, you have to remove the seal housing from the car. An absolute pain in the ass)
Lube up the seals and shift rod, push, shove, swear, curse and push some more on the rod to go through the seals.
    Reverse the process.

Indy will charge you $1,000 for this, and after this job is done, you may think it is worth it.
