Ferrari Chat comments about the shifting problem

I have talked to several other owners of 360’s and they have experienced similar type problems, so as Paul Harvey used to say, “here is the rest of the story”.
Last year my 360 spider (2004) stopped shifting completely. We (My independent Ferrari serviceman & friend Brady Orlando & I) found the following errors P1471 Engagement potentiometer, P1472 Selection potentiometer and P1773 Clutch beyond PIS, 98.57 % used. We put in 2 new potentiometers, (when they were removed they were marked “Citroen” not Ferrari, so we ordered two from a place in Germany). Both potentiometer fault codes were cleared. Installed a new clutch, release bearing, all related clutch items and the car was driving perfectly again.

In March of this year the car started shifting poorly again and sometimes would not shift at all (transmission light on). We had the following codes; P1586 Engine turned off by F1 gearbox, P1741 Engagement potentiometer, P1710 Clutch position sensor. Put in a new F1 pump, accumulator and F1 relay, bled F1 fluid. Now the car was shifting but occasionally it would momentarily not shift up or down when the engine got warmed up. P1741 persisted, also P1710.

On April 12 I got a message from “flash32”. “I will PM you to see if I can help” . Well this gentleman, from Freehold, New Jersey (Dominick) was our “Knight in shining armor.” I have never encountered a person who I have never met having such incredible knowledge of the 360 and 430 as regards this problem. He was willing to spend countless hours on the phone helping Brady clear up this mess. Brady Orlando is very good at his work but, many times we were perplexed why the machine was not shifting properly. You name it, we checked it. We also replaced the clutch solenoid, bled the main actuator, made sure the 3 bleed screws were tight after the bleed and also checked all the ground connections for the TCU.
To add to the problem we ordered two new potentiometers from Eurospares, one at a time to satisfy P1741. The first one was defective, we ordered a second one, that one was also defective, at $900USD a pop. This delayed the final fix by over two weeks. Both defective parts are being returned.
After all the work we test drove the car and the problem still persisted.

With some additional help from flash32 by phone, we swapped the engagement and selection potentiometers and the problem followed the swap. That told us the engagement potentiometer had failed. Finally Dominick found one in China of all places, at a fire sale price of 20USD. We got one, it was installed and now the car shifts like a dream.
