Hello Everyone~ I have taken delivery of the '76 308 from Fantasy Junction. The car is immaculate. I do have one question for you guys though.

Once the transmission is fully warmed up, it has difficulty shifting. I spoke to the mechanic who has worked on the car since new. He is the only person to touch the car. He stated that he adjusted the linkage just a couple of months ago due to the complaint of the difficulty shifting while hot. Could this be a clutch problem? The mechanic who worked on the car said that it very well may be a clutch issue. What do you guys think???

PS> The car has always had swepco gear oil in the gear box.

Thanx very much in advance, J.

Difficulty shifting into gear from neutral is most likely clutch related. Is this the problem?

First gear engages well. Once the box is warm, the rest of the gears do not want to shift at all. I even hear the syncro's working a little but, I do not want to force anything so I always back off. This still sound like a clutch issue? If so, will do.

Try changing the gear oil, I don't think swepco is good for Ferrari boxes, then I'd try the clutch, could be an adjustment issue as well he might not have adjusted it perfectly.

I use slick 50 gear oil and both my F cars shift like butter.

    Hi,

    Congratulations on the purchase!

From your description, sounds like a clutch or linkage issue. It should at least shift into gear with fresh gear oil (of any kind).

If the clutch has already been adjusted it may be time for a new clutch....not sure on a 308, but your probably looking at around $3,500.00. Hard shifting is common when cold, but when warmed up shifting should be smooth and fun.

Where on the pedal does your clutch engage? This is a way to tell how worn the clutch plate is. A good clutch will engage somewhere in the middle range of the pedal throw, a bad one will usually creep towards the end of the pedal travel. The problem you describe would mean the clutch isn't diengaging all of the way, this could be a hydrolic problem. Check the fluid in your slave cylinder resavoir also.

308 clutches use a cable, no slave cylinder.

    You sure about that?!

Just an estimate.....dealer quote on my 328 was close to 4k for a clutch if needed and another 5k plus for the 30k service.....sold the car instead.

That's a shame. 308/328 clutch replacement should be between $1400-$1700, max, parts and labor (on the East Coast, at an independent). The major can run to $5K, but is not usually that much.

That's similar to what I was told by my mechanic here in San Diego.

Dealer quote over the phone....the dealer doesn't have any competition here....basic 328 30k service starting $4,900, told probably closer to 6k....told would be higher if car needed brakes, clutch, tires. When I ask the price of the clutch he told me it could be up to 4k.

Hey everyone. I fixed the ****ing issue over the 4th of July. I drained the tranny oil and replaced it with Mobil 1 gear oil. Problem solved. The car shifts flawlessly. The magnet on the drain bolt had a few metal hairs on it but nothing at all alarming.

    Congrats on the new purchase!

There's a fairly recent thread somewhere on here about gear oil. Redline seems to be a favorite. Some people have also had good success with Mobile 1. You'd be surprised how many have had similar problems solved with a simple change of gear oil.

Glad to hear you got it fixed. Enjoy the ride!

FWIW: My friend had his '88 Mondial 3.2 clutch done 2 months ago here in LA.

It cost about a grand from Italcarguy's dad.
