I bought a standard micrometer at OSH, which is close by my house. It is acurate enough for this project. Though while I was at HarborFreight, they had an intersting micrometer. It stated "digital", but it was actually a mechanical counter on the side. No batteries. http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=895 As the thimble is turned, the counter increases by 0.001". The 0.0001" is on the standard marks on the thimble itself. Interesting design.
Richard, The only reason why I like the "snap" gauges so much is that they are very quick to use. With their metric readings and a set of metric feeler gauges, calculations and subsequent shim replacements can be done quickly and accuately. A standard micrometer will work just fine for this purpose... David
