I may, fingers crossed, need to ship my 308 from NC to Europe in Spring of 2015. Who does Fchat recommend I use? My Ducati will be shipped with household goods, and Jeep via DoD contractor.

You may be able to get the same contractor to do both. It's been done before PCSing back from overseas. They'd charge you but likely less than a freight forwarder...which is what you want to search for if doing it by a second company. Or...look for a second Euro 308 in country, drive the crud out of it wherever you are going, then let Uncle Sam bring it back for you and sell it for good money back here. Think of it as an all expenses paid Ferrari shopping trip to Europe. Happy travels.

    Ciao!

When I moved to Switzerland, it was a piece of cake. The shipping company loaded my personal belongings into one container. The car went into another 20-footer. They blocked it down, and off she sailed. 6 weeks later, I claimed it at the rail yard where the container was opened (in my presence) and the car was rolled out.

If I remember correctly, the carrier was MSC but the moving company was some kind of ex-pat relocation service that my employer (RJR Tobacco) used. It sailed from Wilmington to Antwerp, then went via rail to Geneva.

Remember to take everything out of the car (spare, tools, jack, etc.), lots of horror stories about pilfering.

Also, get the appropriate amount of insurance; make sure you know who covers what.

BTW, for claims, does the DoD still require three estimates and pays out to the lowest?

I will ship Jeep via the DoD carrier and the bike in house hold goods. I would like a shipper that is known to be a good carrier for sports cars.

Don't know yet, will pick position/country in October; but I'm very happy.

Ship Overseas wants $1,600, but I'd rather know their reputation.

Sorry I missed your note -- I was out of town for the holiday weekend.

I was with RJR in the 1990's, before that division was sold to Japan Tobacco. During the early part of my work, I was mostly in Dagmersellen (a tiny little town outside Luzern). Later, I was in Geneva. I was exclusively in I.T. and most of my colleagues were ex-pat Americans, Brits, and South Africans on our project.

I was very happy with Sillevis, transporting my newly acquired 365BB from NYC to Rotterdam in 2010.

    Sillevis BV | Sinds 1782

Very professional outfit. Costs were a little over €8000.

Be very careful about importing into Europe. You will need to register your car here, and you will need to pay import duty. Get some professional advice.

Personally, I would - if at all possible - not bother and buy a car in Europe, unless you cannot live without the car for some emotional reason AND you're staying for a very long time. This is especially true for 3x8's as you won't lose value on them very easily.

Another thing to bear in mind: there can be a LONG waiting time before your car actually gets over the pond. My car had to wait for a transport slot for 3 months.

Well I think I'm going to go with a RORO, around $1600 and if the air dam gets damaged it's still a lot less than 8000 Euro.
