Can someone explain how the adjustment works on top of the shocks, I am sending out my actuator for rebuild so I want to set them manually to the "middle"

The gear on top of the shock just turns round and round with no end - if someone shed light on how to manually set them or the orientation of the gear as it relates to settings it would be a great help!

OK, figured out that it is not a variable damper like others, it is simply hard or soft, the strange part is that the front has a stop to the left or right while the rears you can turn them to hard or soft but they do not stop, you can just turn them round and round on a happy note - they function perfectly and are not leaking (YET!) yay...

    Gus,

If your gear turns 'round and 'round, it's broken. The gear should have stops in it, turning roughly 135 degrees. This is a common, cheap, simple fix. Ricambi has new gears for sale, the fix is less than 10 minutes once the shock top is exposed. There's a few threads on the exact "how to" of this.

Also, make sure that the actuator is working. The actuator sometimes breaks because the shock gear is bad (causing the actuator to "jam" and therefore break). This is done by watching the actuator cycle when removed from the shock, as the key is turned to "ignition on" setting. Means you will need to enlist an assistant.

If any of the actuators are bad, I recommend repair by Captain Z. Will cost $130 per actuator, as long as it's repairable. The factory part replacement will be over $1000, so try Captain Z. Should be lots of threads on this.

    Good luck,

    John

I am going to send all of the actuators to the capt. two are broken, the others I just want updated so they will not break.

    - while none of my upper shock gears are broken, the gears on the rear shocks can turn round and round and never stop, although it does change from soft to hard when turning them.

I assume the way to install the actuators is to have the key on and put the switch to soft, then set the shock to soft and put the actuator on - correct?

Interesting thread. I will have to check actuators. I have difficulty feeling any difference when switching from standard to soft setting ('95). Should the difference be dramatic?

fI the top part of the shock turns and turns without stoping, then your shock is broken. To set the actuators in tune with the shocks, you remove the acuator. Have someone turn the ignition on. You will see the actutor move. Now turn your the top of your shock clockwise untill it stops. Reinstall your actuator and your set. Repeat on all 4. Again if your shock top continually turns then your shock is broken and you should also be getting the shock light in the top right corner of your dash showing. If it dosnt come on then maybe its burned out or someone previously disconected it.

Yes Steve, it seems my car is not free from a lot of the standard 355 issues (thankfully the big ones are done already, like the valve guides)

I felt the same thing as you describe (not much difference) whenever I would flip the switch and now I know why... today when I turned the gears on top of the shocks manually I could not believe the difference, it is like night and day - I am not even sure now that I want it on soft ever!

Maybe I'll just leave it on stiff and forget it (if I can allow myself to live with yet another thing that does not work...)

I think this car will be a great experience for me - it is going to teach me that not everything can be 100% all of the time.

Gus, my left rear shock is apparently in need of replacement, the gear spins and the dash light is on, the setting is on hard or race and won't change. Did you find an economical replacement brand?

I figured out that it turns round and round because the metal gear on the shock is broken, super easy fix with parts from ricambi.

And yes, I have experience sending shocks to Bilstein USA for rebuild - they even offer expedited service at a reasonable additional cost, I think it was a couple days for me to get mine (not my 355) back.

i would bet your actuator is fine, do not send out until you have someone key the car on with the actuator off. look inside and see if the gear turns if it does it is fine. the top of the shock will turn 360 with the gear off. if the gear turns 360 it is just the gear and you will not need new shocks. Pm me if you want to learn how to fix them i just did mine last month it is easy.

Also - I was incorrect above when Io stated it is not variable damping, it is variable - the adjustments are just really close together - the knob only turns a few degrees, much different than what I am used to.
