I'm in the process of troubleshooting a lousy suspension light on a 99 550. I own a Galileo tester and it is telling me that the front left shock/actuator is locked. So I started looking inro that: pulled the actuator - which seemed ok so far (I've not yet found a suitable volunteer to check that the actuator is turning on start up - the internal gear train is not binding and is turning the motor shaft easily) and started looking at the shock itself. I read somewhere here that you should be able to turn the gear on the end of the shock (stock Blisien) shaft by hand through an angle of about 130 degrees. I found I could move mine only about 30 degrees and felt what seemed like hard stops on both ends of the arc. I then pulled the actuator on the right side and that shock behaved the same way - eg its "adjustment arc" is also around 30 degrees. Can someone please confirm how many degrees the shock shaft should be able to turn? Thx

If you are talking about the sweep of the shock rod adjustment it is small like you say. I cannot remember the total degrees but the sweep is physically limited by the size of the sweeper arm and the cutout in the rod cavity

The term "locked" as used in the system does not mean physically locked. It means the system has detected a fault and has put that shock at a predetermined position and left it there. It needs to be unlocked via software before continuing to perform diagnosis or before fault indicator on screen will go away.

The one modification I fully support is to take the entire Bilstien system and put it in the dumpster where it belongs.

Thanks guys - got it. Of all the things I've messed with/repaired on this time car - this suspension system is the most flakey. I'm close to being tired of screwing with it. I'm not into racing (too old anyway) and a set of nonadjustable shocks should work just fine for me. If I do that has anyone sorted out some kind of suspension ecu surrogate so the suspension light does not s come on?
