  1. Probably one of the worst experiences of my life...I was in a Canadian Ferrari dealership yesterday when this guy who knows nothing about the cars buys a 355.
Here's me, scrimping and saving my pennies, getting up at 3 am to watch all the grands prix, knowing the sound of the boxer 12 from two blocks over with a skyscraper in between, hoping to buy a nice little low mileage black-on-tan 355 with the stickshift on or around the year 2045.
Guy walks in, I heard the whole thing. He repeatedly gets confused between the 355s and 348s they had on the floor. Didn't like the 360 because it "doesn't look right".
He went on to ask about the stereo systems, to which the salesman dutifully responded that the 'engine is the stereo in these cars'. He seemed to be a bit disappointed that he could only afford a 355 from about 8 years ago with his cash. He was wondering about the durability and build quality of the cars, and then said "you know, when you buy a Mustang, it's nice and tight at first but then two years later it's not the same", probably causing Enzo to roll over in his grave at being likened to a mass-produced Ford.
No questions about engines, handling, service intervals, never mind the actual history of the car he then sat down and financed.
To his credit, the salesman handled it very well. Though clearly irritated, he hardly let it show. He tried to explain the history and the hand-built nature of the cars, and some of the philosophy behind them to this guy who had no clue.
Anyone else have an experience like this? I guess guys on this board are the hard-core types, but are most Ferrari owners out there just posers like this guy or what?

Another Ferrari destined for an unserviced life. Would not want that car after this owner has had a few heart attacks at servicing costs and started bodging :(

From my own perspective as someone who loves Ferrari but isn't savvy enough to tell the differences of F-models by the sounds. Heck, I'd be happy if I can locate the oil sticks. You sound like a very dedicated Ferrari enthusiast and that's great but perhaps you are being a bit hard on the guy. For some people like this gentleman, the Ferrari branding is probably all he needs to know, at least today. Just be happy he wasn't over at brand X dealership...lol.

Over time there has been some stories like yours, this is the one I thought was reall funny(the one about the AOL'er).

    http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1537

About ayear ago I went to the Concorso italiano set by the Lambo club, there was a guy that just got a silver 360 and on the driving tour cut off a Countach and did some damage to it. He happen to park car his next to mine and was talking about the shields not being available in his car's model year when looking at mine ;-) Some are clueless and just want to get it nothing wrong that with but is better when we know the legend behind it and stuff.

Some others know pretty well the current or late models but don't go back too far in the history/legend and don't recognize icons like the 250 GTOs . So it depends how deep u r into the cars and how far back you go.

When I was in my late teens, I bought a very used BMW 2002. With it I learned a lot about cars since I could only afford parts, so I was the labor.

Anyway, I really lived for that car. So, from that perspective, I would see non-enthusiast buy brand new 320i's and it hit me like a brick, ANYONE could walk into a dealership and simply point to a car and buy it! How could the world be that screwed up? Shouldn't they have to demonstrate an indepth knowledge of all the systems, not to mention the history?!?

I guess others find out that same truth...

Stephen, to many Ferrari is not "only a car", it's much much more. My Chevy Suburban is only a car, but not my Ferrari. I take your point about being a little over zealous and over critical of others who don't "get it", but passion for Ferrari evokes such a reaction, like it or not. Regards, Mike.

    This could happen:

Buyer keeps it for 2-3 years. Neglects to do major service when finds out price. Trys to sell car without service. Realizes that can't get a decent price without servicing it.

If he becomes an enthusiast, he services the car and enjoys it.

If not, some FChatter buys it cheap and does the service. Guy feels burned by the deal and buys some other brand of car next.

Now, now, let's not dump on this guy because he's not too keen on the 360. Granted, the purchase of an F-car is not as casual as buying the morning paper. However, if he can drum up the cash, he's entitled to buy whatever he wants. Either he'll enjoy and preserve it...or someone will eventually have a nice parts car. This reminds me of the old F-car dealer up here in Montreal. You just didn't buy a car because you flashed the cash. On the contrary, the dealer sold you a car if he thought you were deserving of it.

Gee, I had no idea about the history of Lotus when I bought my car. All I knew is that it looked cool, handled like a race car, and would sharpen my mechanical skills. I was right on all 3 counts. Only later did I hear about this Chapman guy and realize his genius in designing and building cars. So sue me.

I purchased my 1st Ferrari This week. An 04 360 Spider. As soon as I buy a digital camera I will post pics. It is the car under the recent Challenge grill poll. I know nothing about Ferrari, it's history or legacy. I am, however, now learning a ton. I saw my first 360 (and 1st Ferrari) in person walking out of a Gentlemens club in Minneapolis three weeks ago and I fell head over heals for her. This site has been very helpful in bringing through my transaction. In defense of this guy - let him buy, then research the vehicle. We all know it is an outstanding vehicle. If he decides not to take care of it then that will be sad, but he ponied up the dough. I will someday know everything about my car, that is a start. From that point I will also expand my love for other models, and become a true enthusiast! Unitl then, I thank everyone one for your help!

    My 360 does look right!

That pretty much sums it up... I once knew a guy who just recently sold his 308, and didn't even know whether or not it was a carburated, 2-valve or quattrovalve version.. I once saw a customer at a dealership who's primary criteria for deciding which Ferrari to buy was whether or not he could fit 2 sets of golf clubs in the trunk... When the salesman replied none, he bought a Maserati Spyder..

I'll be the contrarian on here.... Maybe it is he who has his priorities in life straight and understands it's just a material possession.... I once knew a guy who was engaged to a very nice woman, totally cool, really good looking and interesting to talk to.... He would totally ignore her numerous times and be completely engrossed talking about cars with other people, I wonder to this day, if he's still with her.. I hope so... Ferrari or no Ferrari, that girl was far better company than a car...

hahaha... is this why most women don't like their husbands getting a sportscar? My plan is to get a Ferrari before I get married- enjoy the car and be a total car geek without anybody in my way. I have to get it out of my system...

Sounds like this guy wanted to instantly buy into a lifestyle. You have to give him some credit as he doesn't sound like the type to over annalyze things. If he has the cash to make an impulse decision than he must have the cash to maintain it. Go for it, I say.

Personally, I got stung hard w the Ferrari bug WAY before I was 10. A good family friend got me hooked on cars at a young age & taught me a lot about Ferraris. Once I was 16 I knew about the 308, Boxer, Datyona & a few more & I knew the P4 & 512M & BBLM were my faves even if I couldnt name them. Only after I got my first 308 at 25 did I Really start learning about all the specific models #. But I knew about Enzo about the same time I got my first Playboy :) around 12 or so

so the guy's a dope. so what. it is "just a car".

some people have money such that buying a 355 is little different than buying a new blender. so be it.

it takes ALL types to make planet earth go round and round.....
