shocks and suspension actuator

Have you ever switched your suspension shocks/struts out for an aftermarket set up or heard of someone that did it? I did not research it myself but I thought I recently heard someone saying that if you have to rebuild your shock and actuator, it is around $1,000 per shock. Is that true? What other options do you have if you're willing to go aftermarket instead?
