Shoddy Clutch Repair...Beware!!

    I've been bitting my tougue on this for a couple of years...I had some SHODDY repair work done. NOW, I have discovered thru a Very Reliable source that someone else is doing the same thing, so I'm going to share some shocking news to prevent this from happening to any of the the members... Without mentioning the company,or individuals, a couple of years ago I had a clutch replacement on one of my Lamborghinis done at a repair facility in the state of New Jersey... I discovered that when they replaced the clutch...they didn't pull the motor...they CUT the ****IN cross member in front of the transmission, cut holes in the floor under the console and dropped the trans from below. Then,BOLTED IN a self welded crossmenber.Sad, but true. I went out of my ****in mind, but since the car was sold, I let it go. Now, I have just gotten a call from a reliable friend, who has just informed me that another repair shop in Ohio sometimes does the SAME THING! I was not told the name of the shop involved (I guess there are a few) but I was informed it IS NOT Nelson Lamborghini.. This is BULL****...they are ruining the integrity of the framework as far as I'm concerned. To save a few man hours they are ****ing up people's cars!!!! Not pointing the finger or accusing falsely, I would HIGHLY suggest that any members who have had a clutch replacement at a repair facility in these two states , put your car on a lift and have a qualified mechanic check the cross member to see if it has been cut and rewelded and check to see if your floor has been cut under the console. Hope no one has had this happen to them!!!

    This kind of thing has been discussed here before, it is reprehensible and thankfully pretty rare. The labor that is saved is pretty minimal considering the damage done to the car and difficulty of performing the work.

    That said, your credibility here would significantly improve if you completed your Profile and posted photos of your damaged car (VIN number would be helpful as well).

    Car has been sold as this was done 3 years ago...I have repair order. The intention here is not to identify or crucify repair shops involved, but just to make members aware that this practice is going on. I don't agree with it in any shape or form and any member having clutch replacement done should MAKE SURE its an engine out.!!!!!!!!!!

    I recommend against any slanderous attack on a business, particularly long after the fact.

    It is however important that these cars (I suspect there are a few) be identified and unless carefully restored have their resale values adjusted.

    Please send me the information that you have, I will not post it publicly.

    Hmm.

    So lets review - You're saying, that a friend called you up, told you that a shop "in Ohio sometimes does the same thing". This begs a proliferation of questions so we can better understand what it is your thread is attempting to alert us to:

    How exactly does this "freind" know this un-named shop in Ohio does this? Did they do it to him or is this hearsay?

    How come this "friend" told you it is not Nelson, but yet, strangely, did not tell you the name of the shop?

    How come you "let it go" when this happened to you at a New Jersey shop? I mean why didn't you save us all from that NJ shop at the time?

    Did you tell the person whom you sold the car?

    If the name of the "repair shop in Ohio" cannot be divulged, how can we know to avoid this shop?

    The only reason my friend called me on this is that he was aware of the problem I had a few years ago. As a favor he had heard that another shop was occassionaly doing the same thing and advised me if I had any more clutch issues to keep that in mind when picking a shop to do it. I am not naming anyone, because they have done nothing to my cars and now never will. Thats it! I'm sure that a lot of members here were not aware of this repair tecnique. I feel they should know this goes on when they pick a place for repair. You are making too much out of this it is nothing personal...just good advise for those unaware.Hope it saves the members from some grief.

    Seen the results of this type of attack a few times. In at least one car the cut out frame peice was not even put back in.... Pretty amazing....

    Was this car a down draught? You might as well say which shop did this, since you did bring it up as a warning. If I got screwed, I wouldn't be keeping my mouth shut.

    This car was a Diablo. Why didn't I report it immediately.......I had thought it was an isolated insident thinking NO ONE ELSE would do such a thing. Apparently that is not the case.Yes, it is hearsay on other shops doing the same,but I'm not going there for repairs to find out! I will never have another clutch job done without having it in writing that it will be an engine out repair. Lesson Learned. Anyone who questions their previous repairs simply has to put the car on a lift and look...thats why the shop's name is not necessary.Hope this helps.

    HAVEMURCIE, I personally just want to say thank you for the post. I am taking my car in for service and appreciate the heads up on these shops. I will definitely be doing my homework. thanks again.

    Thanks Wil for clarifying.

    While even Wil admits that this was not the preferred method, it was apparently done with the full knowledge of the owner and nothing was concealed from him or a potential buyer.

    Not quite the ripoff alert we were led to believe and a far cry from the mess that Vaholtorf described on his Countach (still would like to see some appropriate detail photos of each).

    Agreed. If in fact he has info, it should be given up.

    But we are still in the dark about which shop to avoid in Ohio.

    This is most pressing for me in particular because as I traverse across the country in one of my Lamborghinis, by the time I reach Ohio there is the distinct possibility of the need for a clutch change. How will I know which shop to avoid?

    Please help.

    No doubt the advice you've given on this thread not to allow engine-in clutch change is good, unless of course its a Miura with transversely-mounted engine. So thanks for that...

    But wait... how can you be "not going there for repairs" if as you claimed in your first post you were "not" told the name of the Ohio shop??????

    Please respond with clarification....

    Confused in California.
