I have a factory workshop manual but it does not appear to have a section dealing with the primary electrical system: alternator, battery, starter, etc. It has the ignition system, where it shows only one alternator. Am I missing a section of the manual? If so, can someone send a PM and help me out. If not, is there an alternate source for a wiring diagram and specifications. This came about while dealing with an alternator issue which I started another post a week ago.

Thanks for the reminder; now I'll dig out my magnifying glass to read it. It should have been my second place to look.

That's a fair criticism. It's interesting to see how the F schematics progressed from an all-on-1-sheet that wasn't too bad (say a 246 or an early euro 308) -- but they had to keep adding more lines (between the existing lines) & more stuff as they put on more complex fuel, emission, and ignition systems. The US 308i schematics are particularly bad and your 400i schematic isn't far behind (but it is nice that they included them in the OMs up to then -- everything else after circa 1985 is a separate multi-page booklet).

One thing I'd note is that the electrical stuff in the WSM is usually done at introduction (and not updated) so the one in the OM corresponding to the year/model/version is best for accuracy. You don't have the different versions issue, but for your 1984 try to get/use the later 250/82 OM if you can (rather than the 176/79 OM -- although that would probably do in a pinch). Good luck with sorting your trouble.

    Howdy...

I know that there are 2 different schematics for the 400, an early one and a late one. I found this out because my 83 had an "early" owner's manual, and the schmatic was different from what the wiring was in the car.

I downloaded and printed a copy of the newer owner's manual, and problem solved.

Tip: Do what I did, and scan your schematic into a .pdf file. Then take it to a place that plots mechanical drawings, and have them run a few HUGE copies for you that you can spread out on a table, or tape to the wall in your garage. Don't forget to xerox the wire color and legend description sections as well. Worked for me. :)

As we all know..the print size of our wiring diagrams make Bible print look big..so I took mine to Kinko's and enlarged it to several different sizes..24x36 is quite helpful..also an intermediate size in the car at all times is very useful..hope this helps..Jacques.
