I'm looking at 12 guage, 18" guns for HD purpose and want to stay around $500. So far, I'm considering the Remington 870 and Benelli SuperNova. Anybody have experience with either? Other suggestions? What about the Mossberg 590A1?

The Mossberg would be your best bet.

My ex-BIL has that Mossberg, he loves the gun. Of course, he's only shot skeet with it, not people...

I would suggest the Saiga 12

    http://www.raacfirearms.com/Saiga_12.htm

For those not familiar Saiga is a brand manufactured by Izhmash which is a major Russian arms manufacture. The Saiga-12 is basically a jumbo sized AK-47 in 12 gauge, it will shoot 2 3/4 & 3 inch shells. It's all steel construction except for plastic hand guard, butt stock and magazine. Magazine that comes with it is 5 round, there are a few outfits that make 10 round mags and 20 round drums. Dunno what the California legality might be on the 20 round drum but I'm guessing it's banned.

Got mine a couple weeks ago and took it to the range last weekend, shot through a few boxes of 2 3/4 inch 1oz slugs which were surprisingly mild. The 10 round mag is pretty damn big, probably not what you would want for home defense. The stock feels a little bit light to me but I plan on replacing it at some point so it doesn't bother me too much. Functionally it's like any other AK, simple and reliable. The barrel is threaded externally so it's easy to add a muzzle brake (I'm planning to get a Tromix) which will help reduce what recoil there is. They are rather popular right now which has driven up prices but you can find them for around $550.

Having said that, the Mossberg is a great piece and the basic Model 500 Persuader is a good deal at around $250.

According to Senate Bill 23, the gun itself is banned, regardless of magazine size:

I used to carry a Mossberg Mil-spec gun (9 shot, ghost rings, parkerized) when I bush-hogged. It had a tendency to vibrate the safety into the "on" position which was a problem when you'd shuck a shell in and it wouldn't fire.

Having a wide exposure with guns, and having sold both the Mossberg 500 and the 870, the 870 is the better buy. The 500 will still work but its not as 'finished' as the 870 is.

Why do you want the stainless models? If it’s for home defense I recommend getting them in the standard parkerized finish. Remington also makes the Police model of the 870 which is my favorite. It’s blued (not parkerized), wood furniture, and a stainless bolt. A real beauty that will last a long time.

    Go with the 870.

I deal machine guns/silencers. Go with the 870 in some sort of configuration. You can get one with a pistol grip or buy an aftermarket folding stock if small package interests you.Get an 18" barrell.I have seen and had several cop trade in 870 and they beat the **** out of them. They can take it.Not that theres anything wrong with the others, but when you buy guns that may save your life compare it to buying helmets, dont price shop.Just my opinion.Go to gunsamerica.com or gunbroker.com or order from my partner budsgunshop.com .You can get an idea of what is out there and the best prices too.

I'm on the Florida coast and and occasionally boat with the 'gators so one less thing to rust away the better. Besides, sometimes stainless is a preference, much like politics and religion.

Too bad this INOX didn't come in .45, but that's another thread.

If you are looking for a cheap and nice shotgun I would suggest the Mossberg Maverick 88 12ga tactical and you can find one for $400 dlls

That's a real bummer, one of the things I like about Texas is they don't have a bunch of restrictions.

Dunno if you are considering a pistol grip instead of a regular butt stock, or if that is even legal in CA, but in my experience I would avoid getting just a pistol grip unless you are really proficient or can practice with it a bunch. I have tried a few and found it difficult to aim. Even shooting shot shells it's hard to hit what you intend if you try shooting from the hip and I have seen a guy pop himself in the nose from recoil trying to shoot it like a big pistol.

Thanks for all of your input! I've also spent some time reading over the various shotgun forums. Right now, it looks like the way to go might be the 870 Express with a Knoxx SpecOps Stock (I like pistol grip/stock combos and a little recoil compensation can't be a bad thing).

Depends on the patient but I'd use the Federal 230gr HydraShok JHP.
