Not talking about Vin, talking about Audi winning Sebring. Power, torque, speed, and so quiet. Peugeot is next with diesel.

Is this the future of all racing?

Awesome victory for the Audi R10...

As far as F1 going diesel, well, F1 is about pushing all technical boundaries--maybe diesel will be the next challenge, but only if it can make enough reliable power..

They might already be developing one of these Diesel powered F1 cars and just like the R10 it was a shocker. Amazing race and lets just see what the future has in store.

I heard F1 has been getting some pressure to promote hybrid/electric technology in the cars. Might not be a bad idea since most of the world is following japan's lead with hybrid cars.

For the record I hate hybrid cars (at least for now).

I don't think it's the next greatest thing just because it won. I think it's much easier for a manufacturer-owned team to win using a diesel engine vs. a small team using diesel or gasoline. Audi can easily dominate ALMS because of their larger budget compared to the rest. It's not the same anymore like the days of Mercedes vs. BMW vs. Porsche vs. Audi. After the first 3 left, Audi has been taking the wins all for themselves and their budget allows that.

How about if they start use of a direct injection 2 stroke. Every revolution is a power stroke, direct injection could eliminate the intake and exhaust port overlap.

No valves, imagine how fast that could rev!

Hm-m-m! I have thought about this. You could have more power in a much smaller and lighter package. Two stroke diesals sound great.

2 strokes arent really as reliable, and a turbo doesnt really work on a two stroke because it cant build up boost with all the air flowing like it does in a two stroke, i am iffy about F1 diesel because then you dont get the same effect when your at the race, with a lot of the sounds gone i dont think it will be as exciting.

you might want to recheck your facts there. 2 strokes can be just as reliable if not more reliable than a 4 stroke engine in the same state of tune. The FIA outlawed 2 strokes from F1 because they produce more HP than a compairable 4stroke. In the AMA motocross and supercross racing a 250cc 2 stroke is the same as a 450cc 4 stroke. The majority of the racers ride the 4 strokes since it can make them be a much more lazy rider. In fact talking to several privateer racers on the AMA series state that there engine rebuild cost have more than doubled over a 2 stroke.

Getting more air into a 2stoke true is not really conductive to turbocharging, but a properly designed expansion chamber will create the same effect as a turbo by creating a strong suction pulse on the transfer ports inside the cylinder. You can also force more air in by using ram air induction or a supercharger both of these have been proven on 2 strokes in other racing catagories.

i didnt know that they were just as reliable, my freind rides dirt bikes all the time and he says 2 stroke is no good, but i think ill trust you over him becasue he isnt the brightest (i think he has taken too many falls LOL). and yea i guess a supercharger would work but i just like turbos better and they just seem less crude to me. but if a two stroke really could make a lot more power im sure we will see it in the near future, in some auto racing in diesel form...

    I hope not.

I can't stand Diesel, hybrid, solar power and all that stuff for racing. Real fuel please.

I don't mind them using diesel or hybrid technology, as long as the cars sound like they do today. For me the sound of an F1 car is amazing.

Purely based on emotions. Real fuel is for cars, diesel is for trucks and Audis (kinda the same anyway...).

Why do I love my Ferrari, which is so terribly unpractical, doesn't handle well in snow, has no real transport capacity, costs a fortune etc etc? Why am I not driving a Honda Accord or Toyota Camry like everybody else? Purely based on emotions.

The smell of Diesel associates construction machines and trucks in my head. Maybe because I drove trucks once for the Army.

Bio diesel baby! it smells more like popcorn and so good for the environment, no more of the smelly stuff, and because we have enough food anyway, lets keep the farmers active providing fuel.

they wont sound the same at all, the only thing that you could hear on the R10 was the whine of the gears and the turbo.

Whats wrong with ethanol and menthanol? Are they a cleaner burning fuel than diesel.
