Yesterday, I was talking to a neighbor who I hadn't met. Pleasant enough guy, a couple years older than me, big talker/made my first millions by 35/been there, done everything type.

My garage was open and conversation got around to the 308. He referred to it as "a starter Ferrari, a model you can afford if you have $25k or so around" but didn't put it in a negative context. In general, he was very complimentary about the car.

I feel a little offended. Should I be?

Depends on your motivation to have that car. If it is to impress the neighbours, then he shattered that one. If you just like the car, then who cares if it costs $25K or $250K?? And as long as he's not taking a piss at you for owning such a "cheap" car, then why feel offended??

Yes, if it makes you feel better. No, if it does not.
Not trying to be cute but I simply don't understand the point of this question. It's kind of like asking someone else "Should I be happy today?"

Well, he's not wrong, is he?

These -are- inexpensive Ferraris. In fact, that's a point I make to anyone who seems to be a true enthusiast but thinks the cars are out of reach.

"About the same as a loaded F150" gets their attention.

I didn't think I was buying it buy it to impress anyone, but am now feeling that a previously-unknown part of my psyche is being revealed to me: I like the attention. I miss all the attention that my old 330 2+2 got and that I took for granted.

We're a two-Ferrari residential block; guy down the street owns a new F430 and I feel like I need a new dick extension.

If you want attention, go get an AMC Pacer and paint it pink with purple flowers. For added bonus, shvae your head into a reverse mohawk and dye the remaining hair rainbow color.

Of course, I am being facetious. But I am illustrating a point - attention is cheap, you can get it in a number of ways.

That being said - I grew up lusting after the 308 / 328, and secondarily the Countach. Having driven 308s (not an owner), they are incredible fun and highly enjoyable. I could get a faster car or a more ostentatious car, but the car I want is a 308...

Personally, I am envious of you - you have a great car. FWIW, I also own a Series 1 E-Type, and I have at times thought of selling it to get a 308...I guess it's all a matter of what you really want, right?

I could care less about what other people think of my GTSI. It is my dream car, and after 2 years of ownership, I still can't believe it's mine. I have the DMV title in my service records book, and I still smile when I see "vehicle type Ferrari" with my name under it.

Maybe he was trying to impress you with what he knows about Ferrari, or maybe he was being an *******...who know's and who care's? As long as you're happy that's what matters.

Another way to look at owning an "starter Ferrari" it is this..

I have had more than a few people admiring my 308, asking lot's of questions, etc, only to end the conversation with something along the lines of "Oh I hope that I could afford one one day". I then take great pleasure telling them that they could buy a nice one for the price of a new Nissan Maxima.

My daily driver is a piece of crap 2000 Ford Explorer with 120,000 miles on it. I can't afford the Ferrari and a new car, but I wouldn't have it any other way!!

wow, there's really people walking around with that little tact, to say those kinds of things upon meeting someone for the first time?

you shouldn't feel offended, you should feel embarrased for the guy.

Wait a minute, I thought the/(my) Mondial was a "starter Ferrari"?

But yes, his remarks were "poor form".

but the v8 ferraris were the entry-level ferraris at a time when the real deal had a V12, weren't they? for some time, a v8 ferrari was a "dino". as long as he doesn't belittle you, don't worry about it. were I work, a porsche owner would be hearing about the vw connection as soon as the subject comes up, just like the lotus owner gets the "it's really a renault, of course it's not coming out of its garage" and I get the fireball comment. a ferrari owner would probably be asked how he feels about driving a $25000 fiat :D as I said, don't worry, he probably didn't mean to belittle or offend you.

You gotta be kidding...keep the E. The series 1 E may be the prettiest car ever made on this planet.

I look at it this way, My 308 is paid for, I own it, and it isn't leased, and it isn't depreciating.

Do you know what percentage of Fcars were leased back in the 1980's Magnum/Miami Vice era in SoCal because people who couldn't afford to buy them simply wanted to look wealthy? Well more than half; as I recall reading, somewhere around 70%.

I would be tempted to say that "it isn't a starter Ferrari, it is a classic collector car, what kind of Ferrari do you own?"

I'd smile inside, happily knowing that I'm thrilled with my car, and he doesn't think I'm overly wealthy. I often have to belittle the value of my 308 when people say I must make a fortune to afford a Ferrari! I'm a contractor and I don't want my clients thinking I make a fortune, off them! I tell them it's an old one and cost less than a new Honda or Toyota. However, I do think your neighbor was a bit rude.

    All good answers, guys.

As FF8929 noted, it was just bad form on his part. I don't think he was deliberately rude because the rest of the conversation, before and after the remark, was friendly and respectful on both sides and covered a lot of subjects other than cars. It ended with my offer of a future ride and his enthusiastic acceptance.

Personally, I wouldn't make the same remark to someone else.

It would be poor form on his part, I suppose, if he was being smug about it; but you mention he wasn't. I'd take his 'millionaire by X age' comment with a few grains of salt - trust me! Most people with that level of wealth wouldn't advertise anything to that effect, especially upon first meeting someone. Nowadays, 308/328s are owned by true enthusiasts rather than the numerous posers who purchased or leased them in the 1980s. In my eyes, the 360 has been more of the 'starter' Ferrari for the past decade due to it being associated with the real estate boom and new money.

Well, I heard on a number of occasions when I owned my 348 that THEY were the new "starter" Ferrari's.

I actually do know how you feel and feel a little bit that way sometimes when someone makes a snide crack like that about 308's or mine in particular. Then I go and sit in my 308QV, start it up, and go for a drive. Once my hard-on subsides and I come off my facial pain from permagrin, I am ok again, and have usually forgotten about the ass-hole who was likely trying to belittle me for not having MORE money to spend on a F E R R A R I.

Those guys have small dicks and are always trying to "one up" people. Poor form on his behalf, but then not surprising from a guy who leads with, "made my first million..."

    He is a T O O L.
