    Hi all,

I am a constant browser but rare poster here on Fchat! I have a couple of classic Ferrari's myself, however a couple of my friends have the more modern ones (458's and 488's) and have got me thinking about possibly adding one to the collection. To be honest with you all, I would like to buy one that would appreciate, so my first question would be: will a 458 spider appreciate? I was also considering purchasing a 458 speciale, which I believe will appreciate in years to come, however I don't know how often I would track it, and the lack of a radio and other attributes the road cars have I may miss.

So I guess my real question here is will a Ferrari 458 spider ever appreciate?

Sorry if this has already been posted and thanks for your time and replies in advance!

Big price difference between the two but the speciale will always be speciale, so my money would be towards a speciale over a 'regular' spider

I would look at what else you have in your garage and think about what are you going to use this car for and do you have something else that can make up for the lack of what car you choose does not have. If you get the speciale you get the better performance car and the best NA Ferrari ever made. If you get the spider you get a great overall car that you can put the top down and enjoy the sound of that engine and have a different experience all together. The speciale will be more of a hardcore car but something you can drive everyday. If it was me, hands down the speciale. You can always get a spider much cheaper down the road or something else. My plan is to get the speciale and never let it go. I do not care what comes out that is faster etc, that is how much I like that car. But at the end of the day drive both and use that to help you make your decision.

I am following prices of the 458 Speciale for couple of years already. If you want to buy a 458 Speciale, be quick : it seems to me prices are starting to rise again.

Thank you for all the replies, looks like everyone talks highly of the speciale, haven't heard a bad review of it at all!

I think I shall begin to research the speciale in more detail, and look for some for sale around my city!

I am the lone contrarian...I had 458, and a Speciale, and sold both and plan to get a Spider instead. I dont see transaction prices rising, they have gone down slightly this year.

We hit the recession and you can grab one easily given the high production #'s.

But both cars are very different of course. Depends what you want.

According to the majority of this forum, one should only buy a cs, scuderia or a speciale. But in the real world, as well as those that drive their cars regularly, a 458 spider will fit the bill and will be enough fun imo.

9.5 out of 10 on this forum will tell you to get the speciale. I've owned two 16M's and now own a '15 Spider. I've never looked back and couldn't be happier. Resale value is NOT my biggest concern, owning cars that are the most enjoyable to me is. It does everything SO well. Good luck and that's a great decision to have.

Speciale. Nothing they have produced in the last 20 years comes close to it.

Lovely collection you have there! My only concern with the speciale is the noise. Don't get me wrong, everyone loves the sound of an Italian v8, but can you even have a conversation in it? can you comfortably drive it on a 300 mile trip?

I would love to have the speciale, as you are all saying, its special. But the noise is something I'm asking myself about. I think I need to drive it before I can make a decision. I have driven the spider and loved every second of it.

Two weeks ago, i had a same question.....
I choose the spider and i don't regret it.
Speciale is so special, but the open top is more 'special' for me. :)

I have a Speciale. It's extremely easy to live with for frequent driving, not overly loud inside, and I've never seen one without a radio

The Italia sounds worlds better. Speciale is louder but not the same.

Get the spider now and the 488 speciale or whatever it's called when it comes later! Nothing beats an open roof Ferrari.

Spider would be nicer for general road drivng, whereas Speciale would be better as a special treat drive with more drama and rattles imo.

Take both for a decent test drive.

    Nice dilemma to have...

I think a lot depends on your local roads and tolerance to shudder, shake etc that you get with the spider.

My thoughts are the Italia is more solid feeling than the spider, and sounds and looks better (subjective I know!) than the Speciale. The Italia is such a good car that the delta to the Speciale is hard to justify. Again, depends on your situation. But this is how I see it.

Speciale for sure but NO rush, lots of supply and prices softening. Buy when 488 VS with 725 BHP is announced.

thank you for your input, reassuring coming from an owner!

Also thank you everyone else for your opinions, it sure is a nice decision to have. Still undecided, though swinging towards the speciale. I called up my local dealership today and they have a speciale In the showroom for demo purposes only, so the lady will be getting back to me regarding a test drive!

As for the spider, I know it drives well, and makes a beautiful noise! I am extremely excited to make my first buy of a modern Fcar!

I personally do not rate the 488 as a car, I can see why many people love it, but the turbo doesn't do much for me. I prefer the NA engines. I would imagine the 488 whines at high speeds and during accelerations? I prefer the growl from the NA cars. I don't think I'm the only one!

Have you considered an F12? To me, it's the greatest non-LE, NA car that Ferrari has made. And, it's priced between the 458 spyder and Speciale.

I don't view the vast majority of cars as investments, per se, but I agree that the Speciale will always be viewed as special and therefore subject to less depreciation than a regular production 458.

Currently about 800 miles into a 2,000 mile trip around Spain in mine. Lovin' it! It's a brilliant car. Use it for brilliant roads and don't waste it on the shopping.

My wife and I talk all the time while on the road, though not all of it constructive...;)

I might try and post something about our trip in a couple of weeks. Our group of friends has Speciales, F12, 458s and 675s.

I have not considered an F12 as of yet, I personally find the sleek style of the 458 much more prettier than the f12.
