First off, no, i'm not gay. i live in the heart of downtown and a scooter would be an easy way to get around. thing of it is i have to go with a 50cc to dodge Chicago parking laws. Anyone have a 50cc scooter? are they too slow? what about with my 105lb. girlfriend on the back?

    thanks

I live in a college town and they're fairly common, but imo they do look really stupid. Both of my roommates have Yamaha Zumas and they easily carry two people (combined over 350 lbs). I don't like them because I think they're really dangerous. Not enough power to get out of bad situations and not as big as motorcycles where others can see you.

I'll second a vespa and also suggest a piaggio. I'd love to have one but don't have the money to buy one (don't even have a car at the moment!) I see them now and then most people think they're stupid and dangerous, I think they're a blast! I've owned one it was pretty big and I'm not sure of its power but it could do 70mph and was freeway legal :) it was a white one made in the states somewhere could also easily fit 2 ppl. I say get one-gas mileage is great also.

It's only marketing to say that a 50cc moped is a 'scooter'. Problem is, real scooters are classed as motorcycles and are ticketed as such.

50cc isn't really enough to comfortably/safely pull around two people... though it can be done. Top end is about 30mph... by design... that's why they aren't treated as motorcycles.

I have three "trike" mopeds (the original BSA version and the two Honda versions) if you're looking for something "different" but none of them would readily carry a second person...

Riding a moped is like %$%ing a fat chick... it's fun unless your friends see you doing it! ;-)

I would just buy a small dual propose motorcycle instead. It will still be economical to operate, but you can play in the dirt on the weekends too.

Noel, you know what you REALLY want to buy! I think I'd be a little scared to ride around downtown on a scooter. I just think about how often I almost get hit in an SUV because some clueless schmuck doesn't see me. At least with this, people will notice you. Sure, they'll be laughing their a$$es off at you, but they'll see you.

I guess the guys that wear the helmets on the Segways are the same guys that got beat up for wearing helmets when they were kids?

We keep two of these at our Michigan house. I believe they are 50cc. They were originally limited to 30mph, but we had them modified to do about 50. We pretty much just use them to drive from the house to the small downtown area about 3 miles away. While everyone else is circling the town looking for a parking spot during tourist season, we just zip into a spot and go.

You should check out those scooters that the F1 teams use in the paddocks. Those look pretty tough.
