I've got my sweet 308... runs perfect, never a trouble, I feel just damn happy and fun when I drive it. But I'm a tomboy girl and I bought it because I love fast cars... not because I have to be seen in it. Now I'm going through my second divorce and WHY DO I ALWAYS HAVE TO PAY? I paid $300,000 to my first ex husband (No... I'm not a ***** because of 2 failed marriages. The first divorce, no sex. The second, too much sex outside the marriage)

Do I keep my (the) lol>> 308 GTSi which is an obviously recognizable classic (I'm judging by the numerous comments from motorist EVERY time I take it out)

Or do I sell for a measley small sum of $30K?

Advise? I know there is a disadvantage because you don't know my financial status... so this is a moot question. However, assume you are just going through a second D and $$ is not what it looked like a year ago : (

All comments are welcome. Especially the ones that challange time trials : )

Sorry to read of your troubles.

The context of your post illustrates the emotional attachment you have to the car: It makes you smile / happy! :)

Try to keep it, as getting another 3x8 later and getting sorted out will be a hassle. Sorting out a 3x8 into a "good car" takes time, money and patience.

What the heck is wrong with those guys where you are?

We would welcome a woman like you on the East coast!

    Terrible situation -

My advice - don't act as if it's that meaningful to you - just act like it's any other asset and split the value - if he knows that you want to keep it, it's another thing he can try to bargain for.

    Good luck.

    Sorry for your problems.

I put my car up for sale for 3 days then pulled the ad as I could not bear to sell it. Once you have a good one you won't be able to sell it and find another that won't require a lot of love to get it to where you are now. If it makes you happy I suggest keeping it. Far too hard to replace if you change your mind.

My advice is for you to reread your first sentence that will tell you what you feel inside. So don't sell it if you are in any financial situation in order to retain it. As others have said it will be a longer uphill road to find one for the $15,000 you'll have after the settlement. You already have one you love and don't worry about.

Anyway you look at it the asset will be valued and if as in NYS the valuation will be split 50/50 in the settlement. Balance out his share with other asset valuations he wants which add up to same.

    Good luck

Lots of good advice, but let me offer a counterpoint...

If you need the money, then sell the car. Having a cool car in the garage will not keep you up at night worrying; not being able to pay bills will.

Also, these cars can be something of a financial albatross. Relatively expensive services can be neglected for a while, but eventually you will have to open the checkbook. If you don't have the disposable cash to set aside for eventualities, then you very well may end up with a non-running car in the garage that you are having to fire-sell.

In today's market it takes a while to sell these cars for top dollar. If you aren't sure about your future finances, then put the car up for sale now vs. panic-selling the car later will most likely net you more money.

It's totally a personal thing...I wanted a 328 for many years so, in '08 I bought one. It's been a great car. OTOH, it wouldn't upset me not to have it. It's one of those things that Spock once commented on - the "wanting" was more important than the "having." In that regard I'd be fine to just be able to say that I owned a Ferrari for a while. That being said, I have no plans to sell it. But if I needed some cash, it wouldn't bother me at all to let it go.

So I'd say that if you fall into that realm where the "itch has been scratched" then selling it for a price you are OK with is fine. But, of course, only you can answer that.

I had to sell a 1980 Jeep Cherokee Chief during a divorce in order to pay for stuff...I didn't have a choice, but I regret the decision. It was a classic ole rig...loved it. If you need the money, sell...if you don't, don't sell. Just my advice. I wish I could have kept the Jeep.

Personally, I like the "having" more than the "wanting" but Vulcan minds work differently

Some Ferrari owner once said, "I rather divorce my spouse than my Ferrari" Reason is, Ferrari don't b***h and doesn't talk back, and keeps me happy. :D

Maybe its just me, but the OP's story just sounds a bit off. Something just doesn't sound right. But that might just be my usual skeptical nature that makes me find strange stories like that to be too hard to believe.

Regardless of my skepticism, a decision like whether to keep a collectible car or sell it is dependent on too many personal factors that seeking an opinion from someone else is virtually useless. One person might say "Oh, keep the car; its a great car and if it's well sorted, why not just keep it and enjoy it." Someone else might say "Get rid of it, what do you need it for; you're into speed, and a 308 won't give you that." Yeah, all good advice, but totally irrelevant because ultimately, it's her decision based on her wants, needs and desires, not our's.

So, OP, good luck with your decision on the car and on wrapping up loose ends from #2. Oh, and maybe you could post a few pictures of the car, and you with it. You might find someone here who is interested in the car, or maybe someone interested in being Husband #3.

So you didn't buy into the OPs contention "But I'm a tomboy girl and I bought it because I love fast cars" either?

Spock would deem owning a Ferrari "illogical" and would not like it due to the emotions the car/brand/symbol evokes.

Sisko would own a Corvette or older muscle car.

Picard would probably own an Audi R8, but a V8 coupe version.

Kirk would definitely own a Ferrari.

Scotty would own a beat up '72 Ford pickup, but would own the shop they all bring their cars to for service.

    What would Lt. Uhura do?

I think that's far more relevant to the OP.

Keeping a Ferrari while going thru a divorce is WORTH it, for the entertainment value alone..

    It drives the attorneys crazy.....

Sorry to hear about it, tho.....
