    Why would you want to?

Do you know what a maintenance nightmare the E type is? Ferrari's are chopped liver compared to the E type!

As an ex-Austin-Healey guy, I have to chime in here... I kinda like driving cars better than fixing them anymore. I used to joke that I would never drive the Austins any farther than I'm willing to walk. Problem was, it's no joke. I literally spent more (much more) time working on the Austins than I ever did driving them. Jags are the same, finicky and unreliable.
That said, what a beautiful, emotional machine the first series e-types are! I still have that attraction everytime I see one. If the Ferrari isn't floating your boat anymore, get something else. Just know the kind of mechanical upkeep it takes to own an old (and new for that matter) Jaguar. -m

    Go series I.

Even up? Doubt it. Even if your 308 was running great and in perfect condition.

Buy the series one, covered headlights make all the difference. Modernize the ignition system, have someone fix the other electrical gremlins, or better yet, buy ohe that's been sorted out. Plenty of cars out there to look at.

If you're interested PM me, I have a buddy who might take your car in partial trade for a jag.

    William,

Can you provide some details about your 308?

Mint E-types are getting pricy. However, they are really beautiful. As you have V-12 Ferraris, I doubt you will go back to the 308, so getting the E-type makes sense as it's different than what you already have. Make sure you buy a really good, sorted one or it will be a miserable experience.

    Regards,

    Art S.

I have an E-type and love it, but it definitly not a modern Ferrari or Honda S2000 for that matter. In 1961 it was ahead of its time, Ferrari preformance at less than a third of the price, but that was 45 years ago. Series 1 cars are great looking, but the series 2 are more drivable. It depends on what you want to do with the car. The Jag E-type is one of the most recognized shapes in the automotive world, so you definitely get attention, even sitting in a row of modern Ferrari's. I did about 400 miles in the mountains in NC last weekend and my only problem was a passenger window that jumped out of the track. Of course it chose to jump during a thunderstorm, so the carpet and padding spent the week out of the car (needed cleaning anyway). Get what makes you happy, and drive it.

As a Ferrari fanatic and not knowing much about Jags at all, I have to give my opinion here.

My buddy owns the Jag E-Type that was in the Robert Rodriguez movie "Sin City." I believe it's a '61 series-1. It's dark green with tan interior.

I must say that it is by far the coolest car that I have ever cruised around in. I've been in lots of exotics including an F40 and the Jag always receives positive attention whereas the Ferraris bring jealousy and hate. People flick us off in Ferraris, but everyone is happy when they see the Jag.
I don't know anything about the '67s but I know that a series-1 would make a great addition to your stable.

A few pics of my friend's E-Type if anyone wants to see it. http://texasmike.fotki.com/automotive-1/automotive/jaguar/e-type/

I love Ferraris and can't wait to find my car. But, as an E-type owner I gotta chime in here. E-types, when properly sorted, are as reliable as any other 40 year old sports car. My car is a strong #2 and has been thoroughly restored. I wouldn't hesitate to drive it anywhere in the country. In fact, I have taken it on several 1,000+ mi. road trips without any drama whatsoever. The engine of a 3.8 and 4.2 E-type is one of the most venerated motors of all time. Hit the link below to see this beautiful motor - they're like jewelry. Jaguar used these engines for 40 years (C type, D type, E type, S type, XJ) with only minor evolutionary changes. The cost of maintenance is minimal compared to a Ferrari. For instance a blueprinted rebuild of an XK engine will run $12-15k. Rear end rebuild about $1,500. Front end about the same. No motor-out belt changes. Compare that to an F car of similar vintage.

Everywhere I go, top down or up, I get thumbs up and huge interest in the car. It's not a Ferrari but it's one helluva lot of fun to own and drive.

Please, take a look for yourselves:

I think mint series 1 E types convt's are pushing $60-$80k, they are quite a striking car even today, tiny and cool, the wood dash and all the toggles are trick also I think you should do it trade the 308 with cash experience one just once

    Sorry, off topic...

Cool site! I really like the guitars. I recently saw a custom built 12 string guitar commissioned by Eddy Van Halen. It was awesome! The guy who built it brought it to a party we were having. Said it was worth $75,000.

    In the 60's, I owned a 63' and a 65' E type.

Back then, they were called "The instant poverty car." That's what the salesman called it when I bought the second one.

Beautiful cars, but they were in the shop more than I was able to drive them!

    Go for it!!

I service a few E-types, and have become quite attached to one V12 E-type. They are great cars, and have been quite reliable for the owners. Other than a few exterior lighting issues, and a wankie fuel gauge, they have been fine to own and drive on a regular basis. I think they are far more of a car then a 308, and the femlaes LOVE these things...

I took one for a cruze one afternoon after a full serivce, and hit the downtown area WOW I could not belive the looks from FEMALES. Most times they turn their heads at the site of a Ferrari or Lambo, but the Jag pulls them in.

    It is indeed a "Shaguar"

I am not Jag fan so I may be biased but I think you cant compare the two cars, dynamically the Jag wont hold a candle to the 308 but as a cruiser the Jag will be fantastic, particularly a roadster....

Shaguar indeed! It's true, the E-type does attract the ladies. I can't explain it except to say that I was told by my wife in her most Freudian analysis "the car is a 2400 pound, 14 foot penis". Hmmm....

Off topic: Thanks TexasMike your comments re my guitars. Yes, building guitars is great fun. And in the end, you have something that makes beautiful music and will hopefully outlive you. I've built several commissions and the best feeling is when somebody tells you that it's an heirloom or that they recorded a CD with it.

Sure: you could replace a non-running 308 with a Series III 12c E-type and have another non-running car to look at in the garage. :D

Dunno if the prices would come up even, though.

(Yes, I know: '67 would be Series II 6c)

    Initial reaction, was "no way!"

After seeing that the Hubster posted the ? and considering all the other great Ferraris you have, go for it. Bottom line is if you don't use the QV then use it to get something you will use/want.

I took a bath on a mint 2 owner original 69 corvette that I traded even-up for a non-running Lotus Esprit. I wanted the lotus more than the corvette that I hadn't used in 5 years, so I made the deal.

Go for it H. I've had 5 Jags from a 66 to a 2002 and loved them all. I would stick to the Series I with the 4.2 and all sync 4 speed and the glass over the headlights. I thin that went to 67 and in 68 the glass came off. I've had the 4.2 in 3 of my cars with the 1st running the 3SU's and then the Zenith Strombergs on the other 2. Went to the V-12 FI in an XJS and then the 3.0 in the X type. I'll keep the 308 for maybe 5 more years then as an old timer I'll go back to a Jag roadster. Enjoy the ride.
