My 575 has a funny sound like a bearing is bad in the front of the engion where the belts and pullies are until it warms up. Is that normal or should I be concern? I've been told it's normal. Anyone know?

A "Engion" is a engine when you post threads late at night.

Replacing 2 idler pulleys right now due to bearing noise on my 2004 with 5500 miles. Also rebuilding the water pump and replacing a belt it was dripping on.

This is part of what is being done during my 2nd annual.

Not to mention a bad O2. Thing my plugs have gone very bad at 5500 miles. I drive the car hard, but mechanic said it is normal to lose plugs like this on other F-Cars. Either way an igntion issue that should be diagnosed shortly. I felt the ignition problem before bring the car in.

2 bad tire pressure sensors, etc.
    Minor things adding up.
Part prices are far from cheap, lol.

    That's quite the long-term reliability.

My 575 ate the LH cam drive bearing at 9500 miles. The noise was similar to what you describe.. an "new mechanical" sound from the front. When replaced, about 1/2 of the balls were gone. (BTW, so I don't give the wrong impression, my 575 has been very reliable. At 60,000 miles it has had less major problems than my Porsche's.)

Most people don't know this, and either did I until I went through it. part of the emmisions package of 550-575 is an electrical air pump that comes on cold and goes off warm. This pump injects air at the exaust manifold and helps burn fuel when cold, it is thermostatically operated. This pump does make some noise from the vanes, sometimes more than others. If you want to disable it you can pull the relay for it, it is identical to the horn relay.

I am replacing the crank pulley because of this right now. It just arrived finally... it took 1 month!!!

anyway, that was rubbing onto the timing gears (bottom ones)

and the reason was... broken idler bearing stopping the alter./A/C belt!

how dumb... these things are totally dumb to break. what is Ferrari thinking.. such basic parts.

I wonder if they are intentionally choosing bad bearings and those basic basic things that they can easily improve by just choosing right manufacturers for these parts.....I am not saying to become Toyota, but hey, they can improve their reliability and still have their name and prestige.

    don't you think so?

Why not become Toyota, for fully developed things like accessory bearings. There is little excuse for cutting this kind of corner.

It is for just this sort of reason that when I encounter a failed bearing or seal I try to source it locally from my known suppliers. Usually a fraction of the price of OEM and possibly on someones shelf in town.

If it wasn't for low quality, there'd be none.

Most of the bearing failures on the front of the motors is as a result of improperly tensioned belts. Most of the cars we get here the first time have belts that are grossly overtightened. Ferrari has a spec for them but is almost never used.

The bearings used OE for most of that are SKF. There is nothing wrong with the bearings. One more case of an act of human intervention causing the problem.

Yeah, I guess that is probably the case.

I just think there are too many of these in Ferrari that they could improve... if it was hard to tighten properly, why not make it automatic tentioner like other companies do.. I don't understand that.

I am sure tons of Ferrari owners gave up owning their rides due to engine failure that is caused by a small problem like this.

    I think it's a shame.

It is not hard to tighten properly, it only requires a desire to do so.

For those that don't care there are always Toyotas and Chevys.

Don't blame Ferrari for the morons trying unsuccessfully to fix them. Same reason so many Harleys sitting by the side of the road, some people are too stupid to know not to touch.

Interesting point. My 575 was 2 1/5 years old with 2800 miles..Does time alone or combined with little use cause a change in belt tension. If overly tight belts are a human error only then, at least with my car, the problem was a factory problem. If it is a time/use issue, may-be a buyer of a low mileage+several year old car should have the belts checked.

As much as people like to think otherwise the more a car is hand built the more human error is going to be involved. The engine department is on a very tight schedule and in the old department they had to hustle to keep up with the demand of the line. A glitch often meant one less car gets built 2 days later when that motor is scheduled to be installed. When that happened all hell broke loose. It is very much "just in time manufacturing". Those guys were busting butt to keep up and anything not considered critical (and some that are) gets less time than it deserves sometimes. QA is considered so important in the US FNA goes over every car pretty well. They have a pretty good bunch of guys checking the cars out. Still they get a load of cars from the port and the dealers are screaming so at times they have to rush them too. Then comes the dealer. There is a thing called a PDI or Pre Delivery Inspection. It is a 2 page list of things to be checked and adjusted. Guess what one of the line items is? Belt tension.
Sadly, as often as not that check list is checked off at the service counter, not in a service bay.

I understand your point about human error, but I think there are just much more room for improvements in Ferrari engineering for durabilty department. Ferrari knows best when it comes to races, durability is always a priority.

    Don't you think so? :)

I have no problem with durability.

Benz is someone who could use some lessons on durability.

Just to make Rifledrivers point, I just had to do Tensioner pulleys for the noise described. It was an 04 575M with only 1900 mile's every thing was too tight, and the car had never had any engine work at the dealers. So Ferrari just like all other manufacturers rush and make mistakes. As for Benz if people abused their Ferrari's like most people treat Benz's I would hate to think of the reliability issues.

mmmm.. so does that mean when we buy a Ferrari new(or used for this matter) we should bring the car into dealership to check all the torque specs to be proper?

    mmm. mmmm......?

but I guess that might be the best insurance we can pay... it's coming from mechs that work on these regularly, so I guess that's more true than anything!

Thanks guys, that's a wonderful point to know. Maybe I should send my car into a dealership next week to get everything checked...

Just underscoring that I think everyone here with bearing noise are pre-Major service. The tensioners all should have been set at the Factory.

    Agreed, but shocking...

Crikey, have you seen the poor marks the MBenz is getting on reliability lately?

Then again I've heard some striking statistics on their component numbers, such as there are well over 140 motors/solenoids in their high end cars. Talk about potential problem areas...
