Should the Forum be renamed 612/599/FF?

IMO it should be FF/599 replacement (when it comes out in a couple of years).

 

If anything I think going forward the FF should be grouped with the California and the 599 (and/or its replacement) should be grouped with the 458.......this will be more in line with Ferrari's ethos and future direction vis a vis Sports Cars and GT Cars.

 

Get the V8's together and the V12's, brothers in arms.

FF will be solely in a forum, when available the "new 599" will join his V12 nephew.

 

Only I they share the same platform and I do not think they do.

 

I would include it in this forum for now, and then create a new forum when the 599 successor is introduced.

 

I tend to agree that the FF and the new 599 are closer related to each other than the current 599 and 612.

Just like there is a separate forum from the 360/430 to the 458, there should be a special forum for the "new 599" and FF.

 

I think the 456/550/575 and the 599/612 categories were not well matched in the first place..

Shouldnt it be 456/612/FF seeing that these are 4 seaters and the 550/575/599 since they are the 2 seater GT cars?

I think platform. There is a lot of cross referencing between platform types. I would keep platform types together as a lot of the questions and answers will be similar if not the same between them.

For example, I can't see what a person with a 612 would have to contribute to a person with a question about the AWD function or issues of the FF.

 

Perhaps you go by generation, up until there is a significant break. for example the mid engine V-8 significantly split from the 355 to the 360. Then significantly split with the 458. So in this case, I would put the following categories:

Rob- The 612 and 599 share a platform, with suspension moving away from the 456/550/575 eccentric adjustable suspension to shim adjustable suspension. The 612 carried over the 575 F133 engine architecture (they started building them in 2003) and transaxle case, but the OTO adopted the 599 clutch and transaxle case and the 612 uses the ECU architecture of the 599. So those two belong together.

The FF is a completely new architecture with DI engine, four wheel drive, and a V12 first use of the DCT. The 599 replacement (630?) will be on a similar platform, except possibly RWD, possibly 4WD, with shorter wheelbase and more powerful version (750 hp easily attained) of the FF engine.

Logically the FF belongs in its own forum, with the 599 replacement being added when the spy shots begin for a 2012 introduction. Plus, since so many profess to dislike it, that will confine all the whining to a separate location.

Incidentally, the late cars beginning with the 612, have a wheel bolt pattern of 5x114.3 mm, while the older cars have a 5x108 mm bolt pattern. So the 456/550/575s can all pretty much share wheels, brakes, etc, even steering ECUs. 599 wheels fit a 612 just fine, as proven by several owners, and they use the same steering ECU.

The 456 and 612 share almost nothing, except 65 deg V12s and rear transaxle lay-outs. The 456 was compact, with a 2600 mm wheelbase, while the 612 was stretched to 2950 mm. The 599s was 2750 mm, to give you an idea of how compact a 456 is.
