Should we have a separate DETAILING forum?

of course i had to chime in, detailing is not rocket science however if the wrong products or techniques are used things can go bad real quick.for paint problems scratches, swirls, toweling marks ect....... the only real solution is to have the paint machine buffed, but almost no one has the skills to accomplish this, and for the rest of the car there are hundreds of products out there , and the confusion of what to use is daunting. a auto detailing forum i think would be a good idea, some of the polishes and products i use everyday i found out about on auto detailing forums.

 

Things can get bad in a hurry if the wrong product or technique is used.

I see a benefit to having a seperate detailing forum on F-chat.

General how-do-I kind of questions can be answered as well as provide a one-stop-shop for when you have a "paint/interior emergency" and want a response without cluttering up the other sections.

Moderators could move detailing topics over the last year or two into the forum to populate things initially.

There is a LOT of detailing advice to be found all over the Internet. Hoards of products that do the same thing with a dozen or more techniques on how to use each of them. Its pretty intimidating to some people and many don't want to visit these specific sites for advice if they can create an Off Topic or General Discussion thread.

In the end, though, I don't think a seperate section is needed but am keeping tabs on how the poll turns out. I haven't voted yet; I'll be the swing vote.

I think it's a good idea....actually I started my own. When I see a thread about improving my car's apparence I click "favorate" and put it under Ferrari Stuff then Detailing.
I see no problem with having a separate forum...I think if some don't like the idea then they could ignore it I suppose.

 

A detailing forum by Ferrari chat members is a good idea because unless you are a polish and wax manufacturer who is promoting his or her product you get opinions on what really works by pros and novices alike due to the fact they're spending their hard-earned money or in my case making a living detailing vehicles. I have seen a few threads and so far Sunny has the most in-depth advice for people that are not using a circular drive buffer on their cars to detail it. I particularly enjoy debunking the crap products that are on the market, usually that's almost everything you can buy at an auto parts store. So hopefully we'll see where this goes because I would like to post some of the things that I have tried with pictures of the products that work best for me and this helps everybody in the F-chat community that wants to keep their car looking its best.

Personally I think the following suggestion is worth considering.....

In all of the categories (that discuss cars) when scrolling down through the threads choose a point, perhaps threads that have no new posts for 1 or 2 weeks they should be categorized.

So, if you go back into the "Classic cars" section the older posts would be sorted into categories like:

-Wheels
-Paint
-Interior
-Perfomance
-Maintenance
-Engine
-Etc.

You click on the topic, and there you have all the posts related to that topic for your model of car.

I think it would be difficult to search through a thread to find something specific, compared to finding a post in a specific forum.

 

Always buy white cars and forget about it.

 

As long as you're buying/paying for them for us.

You're right. That option isn't available on most of the boards I visit, so I didn't notice it here. Regardless, I think you would have one massive thread on your hands that would be difficult to keep organized. There are a lot of aspects of detailing to cover for just one thread.

 

With only 15% thinking it's a bad idea, I think you have your answer.

 

It belongs in Cars, Motorcycles, Boats, and Planes. As a sticky, it will still be difficult to direct people to post questions in it.

No doubt about that. My point is that it would be difficult to organize (and keep organized) such a large thread, and the bikini thread certainly isn't organized (nor does it really need to be).

 

Massive isn't the problem, but the information being scattered between sections. Certainly, its nice to divide up the world into regional sections, but that it will see less use than the smallest of these is simply not true.

It isn't just the scattered information, but this might actually be a good place for Rob to have a forum sponsored by a detailing outfit.

The bikini thread - well, quite off topic and not exactly part of fchat focus. (but it certainly is a motivator!)

 

To date, Rob hasn't done any "forum specific" advertisers... I've tried.

 

Here's a little something that came across e-mail and am posting it for your benefit, since we don't have a detailing section with the ability to select polls. *cough*

It compares Menzerna FMJ to Pinnacle Souveran with an inside picture followed by an outside picture.

Everyone who came across the author while he was working and to examine both sides choose the left side for its shine and appearance. You can tell the difference indoors especially with the light reflection when the right side with Pinnacle looks softer and less crisp.

Which side would you choose? Time to evaluate whats on the shelf in your garage!

Detailing section is a great idea. Though many people are not the do it your self type, always a lot of good information. Plus, with a little knowledge, people can do much better jobs than 90% of detailers.
