This is our biggest machine, a 70/35mm projector. Used for the biggest theater(#2). Theater seats about 525 people all filled up. ITS REALLY A LOT SIMPLER WHEN YOU GET TO KNOW IT!!! :)

This ones a bit simpler too, just 35mm. When learning it, it takes a bit of getting used to, but once you know what you're doing, you can speed through it like no ones business!! Takes about 5mins to thread one of these babies all the way through, but can be sped up to around 3 and a half if we really push it.

Top and bottom parts are for the sound, ones a backup and ones the real deal(dont ask me which is which, cuz i really havent a clue!). and the middle is mainly for the image.

This one heres the digital projector, one of the first in the city. Very very easy to use once its all set up, just push the big PLAY button! lol. Theres a panel on the side that you *CAN* open up, though youre not suppost to . Not a lot in there as far as I can see, just wires and bulkheads. But as far as the image and colour, nothing compairs to the Digital, its very nice, and of course, theres 3D too!! :D

Another thing, the smaller one in the background is also a digital projector, albeit of a lower quality. These run about 30,000 dollars. Big projector runs around 750k i think (could be wrong). But the smaller one is used for the preshow, all those ads and trivia and whatnot.

BTW, sorry about the poor quality of the photos, theres not a lot of light in the Booth.

These are the platters that we use to feed the film from where they sit, through the projectors, and then back onto another platter. Top and middle ones are used to the most. The bottom ones are normally used when moving prints back and forth between the cutting table and the right platter. You'll note, on the post there are lots of rollers, these are there to manuver the film to just the right place so we can get it exactly where we want it. Of course, you have to know exactly which way the film goes through each one of these ( film strip towards post, away, through rubber rollers, etc etc).

Just behind the platters theres another preshow projector, this ones like most of them are, smaller, not as good quality, but still very nice.

Behind them still, there're the film cans, these are what the film comes in, from there they go to the cutting table(no jokes please!! :p), trailers, ads, and foils added. Then they get moved all stringed out onto one of the platters, and played!

EDIT: Thats it for now, ill post more later. :)

Web design and marketing- celebrating our 10th anniversary this year.

The owners surprised us with this office after being nomads for quite a while.. I'm proud of it, but sometimes it doesn't seem real.

That being said, my eight-ball game has improved dramatically. :)

My understanding is a movie comes on a couple reels? Like 3? How do you time it so the people watching the movie don't notice the switch?

I noticed some empty desk space. Any empty space next to the blond playing ping pong? :)

The aforementioned blonde was leaving.. so her boss decided to hire a singing telegram (dressed as a penguin) to send her out in style. It just so happened that they played one last round of ping-pong together.

The best part was that because it was Halloween she didn't notice it coming until it was too late.

As far as I know, thats what they used to do as they certainly don't do that here, and I don't think they do it much anymore anywhere. I think what they used to have is one reel attached at a time, and when they see the symbol on the frame (normally a big white "blip"), they'd speed up the other roller, and the other reel would get up to speed then come in seamlessly and the movie would continue. Not 100% on this, cuz I've never done it, but thats what I gather.

You're right though that the film does come in more than one reel though. 5 or 6 for the average length movie, sometimes longer, rarely shorter. What they do is come in a couple "cans" and a projectionist puts them all together with the help of a cutting table. (ill post a pic of that later). While doing so, he adds the trailers for other movies, car or drink or whatever advertisements and attaches little reflective strips of foil over the key points of the movie, so they can read by a little sensor and announced on the radio to whoever needs to know when that movie is ending, starting, credits rolling, or main feature starting.

Once thats done, they move the whole big reel onto a platter, and the whole thing is fed into the projector then re-coiled on another platter. In my last picture, with the platters, you can see on the middle one, underneath that cover theres a big film reel. Really wish I could have gotten you a "in-motion" of these babies working, the film really goes all over the place!! :)

Heres one of the cutting table! I wish i'd taken a better picture of this one, showing the cans and some film being processed. But OH WELL!

What you can see in this one is the two spindles: depending on whether were building up (making) or breaking down a movie the film reels will be on one side or the other. On one (either) side, you've got whats called a big reel called a 6000(Six thousand frames to a spindle???) and on the other is the film reel that the films come in or going to be sent off in. BTW, those big 'uns under the desk are 6000s.

Things on the desk! Only real important ones are the green frame counter and beside it, the silver splicer. The frame counter.... pretty obvious what it does, counts frames... lol. One of the uses for this is measuring how long before the last frame to put the last foil. Because if you put it too late, the film will close the shutter too late and the audience, or whoevers left in the theater, will see all that nasty stuff at the end of the tail(end of the film), but if you put it too early, the music or the credits themselves get cut off. Not good. We normally give it about 20 frames from the end, gives ample time for the machine to shut off. :)
And the other one is a splicer/cutter, used for cutting the film in two, again, pretty simple stuff. Re-atached with special tape... etc etc

Off to the right is where extra prints are stored , or ones that are waiting to be moved to their respective projectors.

BTW, normally these places are all dark and moody, but i turned on the lights because it was late and there was no one in the auditoriums (normally we like to keep them off when the show is running, so the picture stays at its best and it distracts from the movie).

This ones of our sound monitoring board, our satellite download system, and the digital projector hard drive & player console.

The sound monitoring is in the middle, and thats the one im most familiar with. Its used for controlling the inputs for the sound for all the surround sound, the booth volume, preshow sound, what channel of SS and all that other fancy stuff.

The one on the left is all to do with the digital projector. On top is a touch screen thats used to control the projector, what movies are being played, ads, etc etc. I MUST SAY, its much easier to use than the film ones. But also much more $$$ and more to go wrong. The orange boxes are the 250GB (i think) hard drives that the digital movies are shipped to us in, all packed up in foam. One movie is about 175GBs. Very high quality. The big black box is the hard drive, thats where the hard drives get uploaded to. That one is over a Terabyte. About 1.6 if I remember correctly.

Not EXACTLY sure what the stuff on the right is for, I've never had to use it, but I know its connected to a satellite. I think its for when we have conference calls, but really Im not sure.

Anyway, thats my work, I'd love to answer questions. Now, POST YOURS UP! :D

YUP! At Space Systems Loral in Mountain View, CA. Pretty cool place. They have two small bays and the 'Tall Bay' for big ass sat's. The original company was Ford Philco. They start with the 'barrell' that's mounted on a large, rotating mount. It can be moved in any position for the assembly.
