    Howdy Gents,
Can anyone describe the symptoms of failing fuel pumps in the 400i cars equipped with K-Jetronic fuel injection?

Fuel pressure gauge reader tool, think snap on sells them or you can make one your self with some basic hardware store items.

btw was the car sitting around for a while with old fuel in it ?

The car had made a 1200 mile round trip in February with no trouble.
When I got home I filled up with non-ethanol premium.
I hope that was my mistake.
Since it costs more it doesn't sell fast. I had noticed earlier that 10% ethenol from all stations runs the engine better than that particular station's premium w/o ehtanol.

The engine runs so well that it is really a shock when it suddenly decides to quit altogether or to go into "limp home mode" whatever that may be.
I can limp home. The car starts well hot or cold.

We will drain all the current fuel next week and put some fresh 10% ethanol into the tank.
    Then I'll cross my fingers.

I was going to say that, with the fuel mileage of a 400i you don't need to drive it very far to empty the tanks but maybe it sounds as though you bought a tank of gas with water in it. That can happen if the station doesn't look after its tanks and the water level in the bottom gets as high as the pickup or it can happen if you bought your gas right after a delivery at the station churned up all the water and other gunk in the bottom of the storage tank.

It's for that second reason that I will never go into a gas station where a tanker truck is delivering fuel.

Are you sure that both pumps are running. Easy to tell if you are running on 6-cylinders by feeling the two exhaust pipes.

If an electrical problem, search my posts for electrical solutions (or read my article in Forza)!

+1 -- there is no intelligent "limp home mode" on any of the Bosch K/KE-Jet systems as implemented by F. Or maybe one end of your distributor rotor has broken off, and you've lost a bank of ignition...
