For those of you who didn't get to see the 'HD' broadcast on FOX today, here are some comparison shots I took. I had two TVs running, one a 1080p set with the FOX 'HD' broadcast in 16:9 format with the resolution upconverted, and the other TV in standard definition (what we usually see on Speed). The HD set is 1080p, but it doesn't matter because FOX broadcasts in 720p.
note: The Fox feed itself is not actually HD. It is the European feed, which FOX runs through their hardware and sends out as 720p. Regardless, it is much higher quality than what we see in the US on Speed (see previous thread for discussion http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?p=136857205#post136857205).

Having the extra width due to 16:9 format is nice. Look how the extra width allows you to see the mirrors in the on board shot of Kimi's car.

Warning: the pictures themselves contain a spoiler of the race result. Don't scroll down if you haven't seen the race yet.

Great comparison. Thanks for doing that. The difference is HUGE! Even though, as you say, it's not strictly speaking HD. I guess "enhanced definition" would be the correct term. In your area, does the 720p feed come through with about a 3 second delay over the standard broadcast? It does here. I had it on the regular TV in the other room and I know that sound doesn't travel that slowly!

My TV is an "economy" model that's 720p (though as you point out, with this broadcast, that's all one gets anyway), but with a 46" screen and the 16:9 "enhanced definition" broadcast, it's sooo much more enjoyable to watch the races. It'll be tough to go back to "low-def" for the balance of the season!

    Great comparison..

FYI - Directv launched a satellite July 6 that will carry Speed in HD by Sept 1. I'd expect they carry F1 in HD at that point. I doubt they have much else they can broadcast in HD however.

Sort of....SPEED has yet to make any commitment to deliver HD content. The problem is that they gain zero market share from the hardware investment. This topic comes up about 2-3 times a month on the SPEEDTV discussion boards and I have traded e-mails with them on this topic. The message has always been the same from SPEED, "TBD."

Very nice comparison. I recorded the race from FOX-HD (media room) for later viewing in HD. I watched the race in SD while doing chores.

Overall, I didn't like how FOX managed the broadcast. The winning driver's and constructor's national anthems were not broadcasted ... just longer commercials. I was getting ready to do my Italian tarantella, but instead watched a sexy model hawking HP computers ... oh well, the view was nice.

Whilst Felipe was busting his @ss trying to move through the pack, Fox showed us a tape of the carbon fiber fire extinguisher used in a third rate team's F1 car. Give me a break.

Thanks for that, Tom. What brand is your panel, and is it plasma or LCD? I have my eye on the 8th generation Pioneer Elite plasma coming out in September.

    Thanks again!

I agree - whatever they did with the feed - it was taking advantage of HD features. I was able to see heat going from cars and asphalt.

I thought I'd never will say it - but i am sad that was the last race of FOX (because of HD)

Thanks for posting the comparisons for those with out HD equipment. We were watching it on our local FOX HD channel on a 42" plasma - it looked like we were playing a computer game!

And the rest of the field.

...and if we had LCD we could even "see" the gas.

dinodan - Yes there was a 3 second delay. My SDTV is running through ReplayTV (like TiVo), so I delayed it just enough to sync the audio with the 'HD' feed. And yes it will be terribly tough going back to SDTV F1 broadcasts. I am trying to find a live internet broadcast source for the 16:9 feed in the future. No luck. The best I can think of is downloading it later on BitTorrent, but that wouldn't be live.

Cannoli - That model is Petra Nemcova (2003 SI cover girl). I love her! :)

Jack-the-lad - the TV is a Sceptre 1080p from Costco. It's a 42", but the 46" version will be out next month. It also functions as a 1920 * 1080 monitor for my computer, and my training grouds for all F1 tracks in rFactor (PC racing sim). I love playing the tracks and memorizing them before each race. I know every turn at every track from every camera shot. It makes the races way more fun to watch and understand.

SRT Mike and others - Thanks for your comments! Anything for the tifosi and FerrariChat community.
