    Correct me if I'm wrong. But does it not look like the black 612 in this picture has a side air scoop?

    It does appear that way, but it doesn't. You have to remember that concave and convex curves can reflect light in a similar way sometimes. While it looks like the curve is convex, it's actually concave. In other words, the 612 isn't modified.
