isnt it about time, to move the 599 gto to the supercar section?
Time will tell, but I think the 599 "GTO" is going to go down in value, and significantly. It is a derivative of the 599, just like the Scuderia is of the 430. There are lots of them (599, I think which may be more than the Scud production). The F12 will soon eclipse it in terms of performance. The F40 and Enzo are bespoke supercars both and I too believe the F40 is undervalued. WHo cares if they are slower than the 599 "GTO." They are both so much more special. Finally, the "GTO" name just rubs me the wrong way, as it is too re-cycled. There are only a handful of real GTOs, the 250 GTO. The 288 GTO gets a pass (in my mind mostly because of its intended Group B racing heritage until rules changed), but it has too much in common with the 308 for my comfort. But to AGAIN recycle the GTO name on a car with no racing intent or pedigree of which I am aware is blaspemy and will always taint the car in my mind.
The 250 GTO was a road car that was raced, not a racecar that was driven on the street. That's part of what made it so amazing. So the latest iteration of the 599 carries that tag because it, too, is a street car whose design and performance capabilities could very well prove detrimental to competitors on a race track. As for the original question, I think the F40 is amazing. And as a hardcore three-pedal fan, I think Ferrari prematurely replaced the stick with paddles for the "sports car experience" since few people will see a Ferrari's true potential - especially on city streets. With that said, the Enzo is just that much more incredible, both in feel and aesthetics. And every owner tells me that the ease of use makes the Enzo even more enjoyable.
I prefer driving the Enzo. The F40 looks better and is much cooler but the steering of the Enzo is just amazing.
A well-tuned Enzo breaking the rears loose at 75 mph in 2nd gear... ...or touching 200 mph in less than a mile... ...is not too shabby either.
the f40 is the last analog supercar. and thus is a vastly different beast to either the gto or enzo - to the point where the car and the driving experience will seem foreign and frightening. if you like the digital aspects of the gto, and are looking to find something like it but moreso....then the f40 is not your answer. the enzo is closer in type. nno, i sent you the vin of my f40 a while back, did you get it?
I am not as good with Ferrari history as I'd like to be, but I could have sworn the 250 GTO as specifically built to homologate it for the FIA Group 3 Grand Touring Car racing in 1962. Now this was back in the day when sex was safe and racing was dangerous and by definition a GT race car could be driven on the street, but my impression was that the 250 GTO was, first and foremost, designed, built and intended to race with enough production to meet homologation rules. The 599 GTO is certainly an a amazing performer, but it seems to me the philosophy is nothing like earlier GTOs, in that it is not designed or intended to participate in any race series. In fact, I don't think Ferrari does much GT or sports car racing any more and certainly not as a Scuderia (not counting Ferrari Challenge), just the occasional privateer. I suppose F1 is the pinnacle and Ferrari does not think there is a need to works race in other series, probably the right choice, but I miss the more direct relevance of GT car racing to street cars. On the other hand, street and racing cars are so different these days that the latter is often little more than a silhouette of the former, so why not just go straight to F1!
NNO The 599 GTO is not legal to race anywhere period. The question is silly. An F40 is totally different than an Enzo and the only an individual could deceide which one is more interesting to them assuming they have to choose between them. Personally I think the only way to answer the question is to drive them both. Cheers
GTO prices will drop like a rock in a few months to a year, new hyper car is coming. As much as GTO owners/Ferrari feel the GTO is a hyper car, general audience never will(perspective buyers) never will, all it takes i one look at the F40/F50/Enzo/and the next Enzo and all is said.... Sell the GTO as soon as you can, and buy yourself a F40, or invest the cash to buy the next Enzo.... my 2c
I believe I did, thank you! Now I just need the serial numbers to your other Ferraris. Yes, I know. But I was trying to make a point that, just like the Stradale, you could take the GTO to a track and get busy with it, and then drive it home. Just like the Stradale, the GTO (and the F40, and the Enzo) are essentially street legal racecars.
Yes and no. You can use some modern Ferrari's as track day cars and drive them home but you can't without a lot of modification use them as race cars. Using a street car as a track day cars eats it up quickly. In the day it did too and after a real race cars need serious attention.
Basically it just comes down to personal preference, does one like all the new fangled gadgets or or do they enjoy a more raw and unassisted driving experience, I prefer the latter.
FWIW, if I was the original owner of a 599gto, there would be noway I would ever decide to trade for either f40 o Enzo.
I just don't see the 599 GTO as anything that special. ferrari just made too many 599s, HGTE's, HGTE upgrades, the aperta, the GTO. Probably some franken-evo's running around cnada... just too many cars. Personally I'd get an F40, and add a 458 for that new car smell and still have something you can occasionally flog on the track. Just a thought
