Ok, so I'm in the process of buying a Dino and my bank is asking for the VIN#. I have the serial, but don't have the full VIN. Is there an easy way to calculate it or just ask the seller?

Use the 5 digit S/N, that's what I did (in USA).
Was fun trying to get it registered too, motor reg might assign you a longer number if the 5 digit S/N is in use in their system.

That would be unique but the full make-model-no didn't work for me in the motor reg system in my state.
Whatever you decide, make sure the "VIN" is able to be entered into the motor reg system and it might be easiest to make it the same as the old title, if you have it.

Find out how it's currently listed on the title, and go with that. But tell the person handling your loan at the bank to Google "VIN" and they'll learn that it wasn't invented until the late '70s, and that all cars made before then simply had serial numbers.

THIS is actually correct per our DOT handbook, problem is no one ever used that format to Title it originally.

    You might try that.

Or just use the 5 digit VIN which is also legal and correct for 'pre 1981' vehicles.

Or you could add the frame designation as stamped in the engine compartment, that makes it look better but still is short of the 17 digits they are looking for to match the post 1981 legal requirements..

WELCOME to the '5 digits and that's all there is!" Club!!!!

They can "force" a five digit VIN into the system, that is the current format for a 'Farm Implement Trailer'....try it!
