Hi all, dropped the gearbox sump to change the gasket and had a surprise, out fell three silver balls plus three springs. I can see where they came from and I hope there the same size !!! I had a hell of a job to get them in and offer up the pan at the same time !!, but what do they do ?

They act as detents to click the shift forks into place and hold them with each gear position. #18 here... http://www.trutlands.com/tav_full.php?tav=308QV_23

They can be a pain to put back, but you can stick them in place with some grease during reassembly, if need be.

there should be a little hat for one of those balls.
do a search for shifter shaft seal replacement.
there is a nice photo of the way those balls go in and how to do it.

There is indeed one spacer that is unique. Sometimes using a heavy grease, like wheel bearing grease can help keep the springs and balls in place while you install the pan.
