Hi all, Go Karts are starting tiring me... I can't see it taking me anywhere, driving around the same track year after year, in a cart that's not competitive, due to it's driver being to stingy to hire a real mechanic, rather than doing it himself without having a clue about what's he's doing, whatsoever. I want to move on now, start learning the basics of motor-racing, as karting never really was my aspiration to start with. I always loved GT and Formula cars, and I think I've found the right programme, in which all of my wishes are fulfilled, called the [link=http://www.silverstone.co.uk/php/ma_ultimateRace.html]Ultimate Race-Intensive course[/link], at Silverstone. Now, this programme is quite expensive - £2,825 (~$5,750), but I might be able to afford it. Though, of course, I would search for alternatives or advice, and I though some of you might have some. Should I go for this ('you only live once'), or is it overkill for a guy only having done karts? Regards, SH
It sounds like a good program. Unlike 1-day "experiences", it sounds like a proper multi-day driving school. Give some thought to what you envision on the other end of racing school. If single seaters interest you, that academy puts you in a FFord (equivelant) which offers some of the most competitive open wheel racing around. No matter how experienced you may or may not be, you can always benefit from professional instruction. If you plan to continue pursuing some kind of career in motorsport (how old are you?), consider this an investment in yourself.
Jack, I would agree on you comment - seems like a programme that one could benefit from. I'm currently 18, so I might just be a bit to old, in order for motorsport to be a career for me (?? - started karting when I was 16) - I think I could consider it an investment in all circumstances, as I'm sure it would open some doors, making me able to participate in some amateur events (although I have a 'real' education to focus on). One should neither underestimate a good time Regards, SH
While no doubt it would be a fabulous experience. About $6,000 is a LOT of money to be putting into a one off program to improve your driving. Surely that money would be better spent going into the next step up the ladder?? Formula Ford or something along those lines. I would do a one day course to improve your driving and spend the rest on getting a race car. I did a High Performance day earlier this year and it helped me each towards that last couple of percent in getting lap times out. I will be going back this year to see if I can iron out a couple more bugs, kind of like a progress report each year.
Thanks for your comment! That was exactly my initial thoughts, as I've got no idea what this kind of event would add to my abilities, really (that I don't already know). What bugs me, though, is that investing in a racing car is quite an expense too - should I turn out to be a sucker (which I'm probably not, as I'm doing fairly well in karting), the money would be lost for good, as with the course I would have learnt something. I might start with a one-day course, to see how I'm doing, and then move on from there. If anybody would care to add something further I would of course still appreciate it.
