I don't know if anything has been posted about this but some friends have taken a tour and said it was phenomenal. Hopefully, the next time I'm in the area, I can check it out. Bob Z. The website is most informative.: www.SimeoneMuseum.org 6825-31 Norwitch Dr, Philadelphia. 215 365 7233
Yes, I have been there and it is worth the trip. For me the highlights were original and unrestored Daytona cobra coupe (1 of 6) and an Aston Martin DBR1. If I remember correctly, there were two ferraris: a '58 pontoon fendered TR and a 700 Monza (?). The also have the only LeMans winning Bugatti ("the tank") and the only LeMans-winning MG.
It's great that Dr. Simeone got his museum put together. Frankly, I liked it better when it was in a two story garage near South Street. You could touch, feel (Dare I say it, "sit in") some of the cars. They were all out there to see, in a great old building. It couldn't fit tons of folks at once, but the cars seemed more real there. He has some great stuff, and I think we should organize a FerrariChat outing. It's been talked of before. I have pix somewhere of the old location and the cars, posted here. Lemme see if I can search up a link or two. got one http://www.briantobin.org/gallery/v/Photography/FAS-Auto-Museum Dave
Hey all you regulars. Just thought I would let you know that the local Porsche club is currently making arrangements for a guided tour ( normally self guided) of the museum. It will be guided by the founder himself Dr. Simeone. It is going to take place in early January. I think the cost for a ticket is less than $20. The plan is to meet at the regular C and C location on a Saturday and then caravan over to the museum. Plans are firming so when they do I will let you know the details. You dont have to be a PCA member to attend. PM me if your interested and I will put you on a communication list. Its snowing!!!!! Jon in Delaware
Well, I guess I need to jump in. The Mid-Atlantic Ferrari Club is planning a trip in early February or late January to the museum and a possible dinner stop in Baltimore on the way back. Details to follow. Just an fyi as an option for those wanting to go from our area. Robert
Holy crap, I just read the Simeone Collection list on their website. I'm ready...can anyone go this afternoon? LS
I have met Dr. Simeone and know some of his cars. I can assure you that he has the cream of the cream, the very best in the world. Nothing can top it. Sensational taste and incredible selection. History all over the place. And Dr. Simeone is very charming and extremely knowledgeable. Top of the top. The Ferraris are the 250 TR Spider Scaglietti #0710 TR formerly owned by Joel E. Finn. Plus the 1954 375 MM Spider Pinin Farina #0412 AM originally owned and raced by Pietro Palmieri of Rome, later owned by Hollywood actor William Holden. It was also raced at the Bonneville salt lake in 1960 with Howard Jeffrey where it ran 165 mph. Dr. Simeone acquired this great car in January 1994. Don't wait and go and have a look! Marcel Massini
Guys, Marcel has endorsed it...what are we waiting for??? Sounds like a perfect FChat event...let's see what we can do with logisitics, rally, lunch, etc... LS
I was there this summer the week it opened. I was in Philadelphia for the National MGB Register annual convention and a member was able to arrange a tour of the museum, Dr. Simeone took the time out of his schedule to give us a guided tour and told us stories of how he acquired the cars. The location is absolutely gorgeous inside as he has taken the time to make murals and sets for the majority of the cars to set in. It was an amazing sight to see so many wonderful cars under one roof and he even fired up the MG that he has and took for a spin in the back parking lot. I may be a young college student and sometimes people have a lack of respect for me due to my age, but he was more than happy to answer my questions after the tour and offer insight into the wonderful stories of the cars he owns. If I get back to the area it is a place I would defiantly return to see again. I have pictures from inside the museum somewhere and I can upload them if any would like to see them.
Hey Marcel, what are you doing over here? Aren't you busy chasing cars hither and yon? Great referral for the doc, who is a great guy, very personable, and knows the history of EVERY CAR in his museum. Dave
As Jon mentioned earlier here goes ---- The plan will be to head up to the Museum on Jan 17th 2009 , PCA Delaware members will join the normal crowd at the Saturday C&C in Jan and then anyone present is most welcome to join the tour to the Museum. Current thinking is we'd leave Starbucks at 10am. I'm also arranging for Dr Fred Simeone to be at the Museum on the day, so he can walk us around the museum - nothing better than getting his take on the automobiles he's acquired. After reading the thread it looks like getting Fred there is an absolute must.... As this is being arranged as a "group visit" we should enjoy a group rate for entrance - will advise when known. Nick D
Well it official...see the post above from Nick D. the President of the Porsche Club. So mark your calendars boys and girls its going to be a nice break from the winter doldrums. January 17th meet at the C and C regular location on Rt 202 and Dilworthtown Road and then leave for the Museum around 10AM. Everyone is welcome to join in the rally to the Museum. Jon in Delaware
Guys, Sorry I have been very busy lately. There is PLENTY of off street parking. The museum is actually the next building up on the left side in Dave's photo. The museum is awesome, and it is a great place to go to. I was just there for the first Spirit of Competition Award that the museum gave to Mario Andretti two weeks ago. Enjoy the tour, and it is a real treat if the Dr. is your tour guide. Enjoy, and let me know if I can answer any questions. Erik
Dennis Adler's pictures of the cars in the museum. Great collection. http://www.carcollector.com/index.php/multi/photos/view/10.html http://www.carcollector.com/index.php/multi/photos/view/11.html
I went it was beyond incredible. Cannot endorse enough. The doc roams the floor occasionally and knows everything, really just a terrific place. And yea there's a huge lot there maybe 15+ spaces that's on site off the street with a fence so I think it would be ok to bring something fun. However, the surrounding area isn't the best.
I'll keep this thread coming up from time to time so it doesnt get lost in the old threads vault. Please let us know if you intend to go so we have some kind of record for group sales at Simeone. Maybe just a quick post of your intentions so when I go back and look over the thread we can count you in. thanks Jon in Delaware
