Ok i got in a discussion/argument with a freind of mine over how cars are transported to the dealer. Obviously your run of the mill toyota or dodge are transported on the back of the open semi trailers. However he thinks that the same goes for exotics but I dont think they would do that to cars of that caliber. So heres my question, how do dealers transport exotic cars across country? Do dealers out source to companies like Exotic Car Transport or do they simply buy a trailer of there own and send a guy out to pick it up?

I don't know if it's still true but for quite some time FNA was using Horseless Carrage to deliver new cars to the dealers.

Well, I have travellede quite a bit. And I think it's different depending on where you are. In italy, I have seen those open trucks you speak off, with 6 or 7 Ferrari's on them. So in Europe I would guess they use both open and enclosed trailers. I think that in the US, it's FNA that handles the transport, and therefore it differs.

It is a mixture of open and enclosed trailers. As much as you would think the dirt and road grime is the issue, vandalism of parked trailers is much more of a concern. As much as you and I might bow in reverence to a Ferrari, they are simply cars (used and new) to the transporters, brokers and dealers.....just like a Honda or an Isuzu. They are bought, sold and transported as wholesale tin.......often without inspection.

I know they are not exotics but when the Chrysler dealer I work at recieves it's Vipers and Prowlers (when they still made them) they came in enclosed semi-truck trailers owned by a private source. I assumed all high-end stuff was shipped this way.

Where are those pictures taken? Looks like a beatiful spot...

F of O probably just uses those rigs to transport their race cars and support gear. They would draw way too much unwanted attention on the streets if transporting regular customer cars --- I doubt FNA / Dealerships would risk the exposure to vandalism, theft, etc.

I know Symbolic Motors here in San Diego (Lambo, Bentley, Lotus) uses enclosed trucks. I've watched them load and unload, and the trucks I've seen are third-party vehicles. Very clean, very careful.

I have worked for dealers for 18 years.

Enclosed transport over long distances is horrendously expensive compared to open transport. 3-5 times as much money in some cases. And, there is no reason for it to be so either. Short trips may be similar in price, but it is uncommon.

Most manufacturer's use open carriers and rail........PCNA does (except for CGT's) and Ferrari, IIRC, uses enclosed transport, but since each of their clients is overpaying to begin with, cost doesn't matter.

I've shipped F430 spiders (amongst other $$$ cars, and that is all they are, cars) across the country in open trucks without damage or vandalism..........enclosed freight is as much of a ripoff as duty free shopping.

Not relevent in an American context but this story might amuse some of you.

It was 2003 and myself and a friend were going to the dealer to fetch his new 360 that has just arrived off the ship, the intial idea was that the truck would bring the container to the dealership where the car would be off loaded, until it was discovered the truck was too high off the ground and the ramps too short.....

So we say there while some Italian character was shown and a solution was found, in Cape Town there is a railway yard, rather disused but it had a large platform which might equal the height of the truck, anyway we get there, truck reverses up agains the platform...still problem so we all march into a saw mill and take too roof beem, here we are truding through weeds and sand back the platform...when we go there we saw that between the two platforms was a stable of about 12 horses....as the 360 fired up and drove out onto the platform the we noticed a one of the horses had a foul it was a this point the symbolism kicked in....here was a prancing horse being deliverd next to horses.....

Thought this might be a rather differant "delivery story"

so from the sound of it, it varies from one to another but more often than not they are transported in enclosed trailers, correct?

    Thanks for all the info.

Very true. I went to La Jolla High and got the opportunity to watch their trucks hard at work almost every single day in front of the store.

True story. Not far from where I live a truck driver parked his rig loaded with new Mercedes. He lived near by and went home for the night. A kid somehow set fire to the trailer and burned up the whole lot. Now before you ask it was 20 yrs ago and I don't remember the particulars. Seems to me the kid got a slap on the wrist and a short probation.

Taken this year at a local cruise/rally. About 50 Ferraris showed, and ended up at a "top" golf course north of Toronto.

2 MC12's, 2 Enzo's and 1 FXX showed up for the rally, amongst other Ferrari's.
