Yes, in a 5-door family saloon with a listed top speed of about 130...........had to check it! Paul M
Some of these were readings from someone in the car with me . . . at various times over the last 15 to 20 years. There are 3 instances where I was on radar. All cars were mine except the Brabus. I did about 125 in my 1992 Porsche 911. I did about 135 in my 1989 BMW M-6. I did about 135 in my 1988 Mercedes 560 SL. I did about 180 in Ferrari 355 (I know that people say this car would do "only" 185, but I had a Tubi Exhaust and I felt there was more in the car--I just ran out of road. I was clocked a 183.2 in my CS -- on an airport tarmac during a sponsor's event, using a California Highway Patrol recently calibrated radar. A formula 1 driver took my F-50 and got up to 195 on the autobahn between Munich and Frankfurt with me in the car with him. In my 550 Barchetta, I was clocked at 168--a friend of mine who is a police officer clocked me on a Saturday morning at 7:00 am on Highway 17 between Charleston SC and Georgetown SC (very wide deserted stretch of road). I was clocked at 203.4 on the tarmac of the John Wayne Airport in Newport Beach driving a Brabus 7.3 Liter, Mercedes CL V-12, twin turbo with 7 forward gears. This was in 2003, before many cars had 7 gears. This was a promotional event and not my car. I have taken my M-5 up to about 135 on nearby highways.
196kph, sure thing, although is 2.1 times the speed limit... fastest I´ve been in a road car? my car, me driving, 240 kph just shy of the alleged manufacturer limit and with some stamina left...turbo at full boost and revs up to 5700...the best part is passing the 200 kph...the next highlight comes at 300kph...
110mph (indicated) in my first testarossa. 115mph (indicated) in my saab 900 turbo. 120mph (indicated) in my 550.
Doubt that anyone here can beat that on public roads The A81 is IIRC the longest stretch of road without a speed limit on the whole world. Serves as a "test track" for Mercedes and Porsche, Sunday morning is a great time to spot their new cars! I actually did my fastest speed there - slightly over 220kph (140mph) in my Dad's Alfa Romeo.
122 mph on the Polaris Indy 650 turbocharged factory test snowmobile, Shadow Mountain Reservoir, January of 1988.. 156 mph in my 68 Camaro SS 327 @ 5800 rpm, 2:73 rearend, on the highway between Happy and Tulia in Texas in 1982... 160 mph in my 2002 Maserati Coupe in 2007...
I'am saying nothing last time I did the mod on the UK bit closed the thread..Autobahn's are the bomb..
Around 140mph in a 73 Datsun 240Z 120 in a 944S Cabriolet 130 in a 930S (Felt like we were hardly moving) The most fun was 105 to 110 in a 125cc shifter Kart. That FELT FAST.
I don't race any. I just buy seat time when the opportunity presents itself. But basically anything that is available for $$$.
I was pulled over for "exceeding 130" in a 55. The cop wrote me up for 101 b/c he didn't clock me but said that he was doing 130 and i was still pulling away. It was at night and he didn't turn on his lights(red & blues) till several miles later when he finally caught up with me. I told him that i know it was stupid but that the road was empty and curiosity got the best of me. He said that he could/should take me to jail, but he remembers what it was like to be young and since i didn't have any other traffic violations on my record, he let me slide with a 101 in a 55 and told me to be safe. I think i was 18 or 19 at the time.
What I'm about to say could be purely speculative...and maybe not factual....but..... 120+ in a 1971 Buick Electra 225 2-door with a 455 cubic inch motor (monster torque motor) 135 in my 1970 Plymouth Roadrunner 440-6 pak with an automatic trans (I beat a lot of "superior" cars with this one!) 160+ in my lightly modified 1991 ZR-1 Corvette (bad-ass car that ran 12-flat quarters on street tires & exhaust) 178 in my old 1987 Testarossa (very stable, wind noise was pretty serious, that TR had long legs...had maybe 10mph left in her!)
Probably bi monthly in a Subaru wagon. I tried, but couldn't manage more than 130 from it. In 2002 I lost my license for 6 months, spend a night in jail and paid over $850 for passing a cop at night at 150mph. Just the look (anger) on his face was worth it. In 2000 on my way to the USGP got pulled over (well it was more of a road block scenario) in Indiana together with two guys in a modified Boxster for "racing" on public roads in heavy traffic. Sheriff said the phones were ringing off the hook in every township in Indiana from the Ohio border to the point were we got stopped. I did not lose my license because I gave the police my international one from EU, but still paid about $750 ticket. Later on we pulled over with the Porsche guys and the one driving came out grinning with "It was worth it! Wasn't it?"
Close to 180 in the F355 with the top down, between LA and Vegas. Totally stable, but a little windy.
In Australia (NSW, new laws coming in) you all would have lost your cars ... they would have been crushed! So if you visit, ensure you hire a car ... or use a race track. Pete
I was upside down in a 348 Spider this year. Does that count? First time upside down ever. I guess if your going to do it you might as well do it with class.
About 165 in a 427 AC Cobra on Los Angeles freeways some 30 years ago. The car I used to race, a 970cc Mini Cooper, had a top speed of about 105...
