Hey, Prompted by the debate in the other thread, I figured it's time for another poll. Very simple, yes or no answer - No cop-out option! Personally, I don't much care either way but suspect that would be the majority answer if offered. So, you've gotta come down on one side or the other...... Cheers, Ian
How much more "mixed up" do we need? There's some "purists" out there who reckon it's all too close and mixed up as it is!........ Cheers, Ian
Yes, I remember the pit stops being twice as exciting because you never knew when the car would burst into flames or the car would drive away with the rig still attached. Bring it back!
I've always hated refueling. In general I never liked pit stops as a race strategy, but it's the nature of the beast these days and I accept it. Refueling just adds an unnecessary danger to the pit lane, and it always seemed that it only went awry when the equipment failed, which had nothing to do with the teams. If refueling IS reintroduced, they should allow teams to develop their own systems (upon FIA approval) so at least it's another extension of each team's engineering capabilities.
Devils advocate here; It also made the cars significantly lighter and hence faster....... Which may or may not be relevant of course. Some of Michael & Ross' strategies back in the day were truly awesome to watch - He'd do a 3 stopper versus the other guys 2 and still come out ahead. Cheers, Ian
Absolutely. I hate seeing them *****footing around saving fuel when they should be out there burning the wheels off the car for an hour and a half. I know the tires now limit this somewhat, but still think the drivers would be more free to go nuts if they were on light fuel. Mark
IIRC, they were down to about 12-15 seconds. (?) Took all the pressure off the tire changers - They had time for a smoke or watch the TV back then........ Cheers, Ian
It was more like 6-8 seconds if I remember right. That's still longer than it took to change the tires. Mark
I voted 'no'. I'm a purist. Refueling in a 2 hour race is kinda like a cleats-up slide into 2nd....it really isn't what the game is about. (Why don't marathon runners be made to chug a quart of milk at 13 miles? It would add uncertainty.......<sarcasm> )
I see positives/negatives in both. With refueling, a F up during the race could be corrected by radically changing the strategy. Or a radical strategy (4 stop for MSC in france) could be used to win a race and still keep things close. Without refueling, the playing field is more level and it's more down to the tire guys getting their **** together. If it's stays away I don't care. If it comes back I don't care.
An unnecessary artifice. The fewer pits stops, the better. Let the race be decided on the track, not in the pits.
+1, why pass on the track when you can pass in the pits through strategy. I remember too many very early Sunday mornings with so much promise of on track action, morphing into strategic decisions of how to be able to move up a position without the inconvenience of actually making a pass. I hate DRS, but I find it less offensive than all of the position changing in the pits rather than on the track.
I see both sides to refueling. I like the whole contest since there are so many involved already in the pits and with the computers. I like the added storyline. And I like that they are driving as fast as the limits can take them without worrying about a lack of filling up. Robb
Harder tires which run longer equals more fuel. Longer stints. Balance that against shorter stints--softer tires and less fuel. Cars will move faster but probably need a significant margin to overcome the time in the pit lane. Makes racing better. Bring it back
Sure it is what the game is about, as it adds another layer of "team" to a team sport. ...but should they be made to carry all the water that they will consume during the race from the very beginning? I vote 'yes'. Light cars and heavy cars might even eliminate the need for DRS. Heck, while they are at it, they should be able to change the KERS battery as well and gain some advantage.
Dont need it, with tires only lasting 10-12 laps at some races we have enough pit stops the way it is.
