Sir Stirling Moss in intensive care after falling three
    storeys down a lift shaft

    By Daily Mail Reporter

Motor racing veteran Sir Stirling Moss is in hospital today after breaking both
ankles when he fell three floors down a lift shaft.

The 80-year-old is recovering after surgery following the accident at his
    high-tech Mayfair home on Saturday.

He also suffered four broken bones in his foot and four chipped vertebrae when
the lift door opened at the wrong time and he stepped into the empty shaft.

Sir Stirling was taken to the Royal London Hospital in east London after the
accident. He was yesterday moved to the Princess Grace Hospital in west London
    where he had his operation.

Plates and pins were used to secure the bones in his ankles. He is expected to
be moved out of intensive care later today.

His wife Lady Susie Moss said: 'This was a very unfortunate accident, it could
have just as easily been another member of the family stepping into where the
    lift should have been.'

It is expected that the former racing star, who won 16 Grand Prix between 1951
and 1961, will take up to six weeks to recover from his injuries.

Stuart Pringle, secretary of the British Racing Drivers' Club, said: 'Sir
Stirling suffered a bad accident at the weekend. Lady Moss has just telephoned
me and although Sir Stirling is not in good shape, he
    is no longer in danger.

Support: Sir Stirling's wife Susan described the fall as 'an unfortunate
    accident'

'As a result of a malfunction of the lift in their home, the lift doors opened
on the third floor when the lift was waiting at the fourth floor.

'Sir Stirling stepped through the doors on the third floor and dropped three
storeys down the lift shaft to the concrete base.

'He broke both ankles and four bones in his feet in the fall, as well as damage
to ome vertebrae. Amazingly he did not suffer any internal injuries.

'It is hoped that Sir Stirling will be moved from intensive care later today and

Lady Moss says he is in remarkably good spirits and already complaining about
the size and quality of the hospital breakfast.

Moss's Mayfair home is famously decked out with all sorts of gadgets, including
the carbon fibre lift specially made for hime by the Williams Formula One team.

ooh, I really hate to hear that. When I had the chance to meet him and actually carry on a discussion about cars he was very enthused and loved it. Lady Moss is a wonderfully congenial lady..... Best Wishes Stirling...

A copy of the post I sent to NNO concerning my meeting Sir Stirling if you care to read it. Not trying to highjack the post. I do really hate to hear this for him and wish him and Lady Moss a speedy recovery for him......

For those looking for much more detail, this is a topic running in several
threads already. Do a search for STIRLING (NOT STERLING) Moss and you'll
find them, along with links to video.

OOPS - sorry about the spelling - but I did check to see if there were other threads about this, but I must have looked in the wrong places. The one thread that I just found is in the F1 section, but while it fits in there, it seems to me that it is of broader interest than than just the F1 section . . . .

Perhaps a moderator should merge this "rethread". We don't need another one.

I wish folks could get the man's name right!

    1. Soon after I first posted, I sent a PM to a moderator.

    2. Hey, thanks for reminding me again - I previously apologized for not getting "the man's name right." You think this is some sort of an anti- 9x9 plot? (Claude knows what I'm talking about!)
