Skid Plates - yay or nay ??

Is it recommended to put skid plates on a Scud if the car will be driven mostly on suburban NY roads and highways ? (no city driving)


CAN SOMEONE TELL ME HOW MANY INCHES FROM THE GROUND THE LOW POINT OF THE BUMPER IS ON THE SCUD ??????? My Turbo is 6 inched from the ground and very few issues with clearnace.

Any particular type?

What should the installed cost run?

I did a search and read the past opinions but thought there might be some updated thoughts.

I once thought only Hills engineering made skid plates for the 430. Those were good quality but my only gripe was you need to drill them onto your lower bumper. Then I came across the Fabspeed ones which IMO are top notch and fits right into the OEM bolts. Perfect. Thank god I've not done the skid plates, now I can go for a set of Fabspeed plates.

 

Forgot to add, no need to pay for labour. DIY in a couple of minutes if you're familiar, else 30-40minutes. LOL. No drilling.

 

The clearance isn't the only thing you need to know to calculate if you will drag or not. How far from the front axle is the nose will be key. With those two measurements you can calculate the angle of inclination that will cause a scrape. Add in the wheelbase and you can calculate the maximum rise for any given run.

OR, you can save some time and take it at face value that you will drag. My 360 scrapes easily and any speed just makes it worse (suspension compresses some). Plus most streets have a crown and some are rather exaggerated. That also makes the issue worse. It isn't if you will scrape but how often and how much.

 

I put on skid plates. I don't see any downside and I have hit them several times on curbs or inclines in garages.

 

Definitely fit skidplates........you'll save your bumper.

The Hill ones are so small compared to those.

 

these were all the rage some years back with alot of porsche guys, until people started to catch them on slightly high parking lot curbs, and then backing up, and ripping the front bumper off.

The decreased ground clearance is a bit of a factor as is the inflexibility of the metal that allows various things on the road to catch on the skid plate.

I personally would not recommend it-- If you are really concerned you could 3m the bumper underneath with a double "coat" application of 3m / clear film.
